So I finished up my in-car engine freshening (new intake, carb, timing chain, oil pump) and I have a pretty major oil leak from the back. Originally I was thinking it was the rear main becuase that was the one thing I didn't check, but after reading several threads I am thinking the pan gasket is on wrong. I used the one piece, but did it from underneath, which sucked.

How do I tell if it is one or the other? There was oil on the pan and sides, but on the plate on the tranny too. After about 10 mins of running it in the driveway there was a 6-8" puddle. It did not get driven.

I got a *great* deal on an engine hoist, but I'm kinda freaked about pulling the engine. Haven't done that since I watched my dad and bro do it 15 years ago.

If I do pull it, do I just need to undo the headers, engine mounts, and bolts to the tranny?

If it is the oil pan, is it worth the effort to pull the engine to make sure I put it on right this time?

get the felpro one piece gasket, you wont be sorry (except when you pay for it)drop the starter, cross member, and center link. felpro gives you a set of dowel pins to align the gasket. it isnt too bad doing it from underneith, (ask me, ive done mine 3 times, turns out the problem is a warped pan rail, thanks frpp!)
