just wondering...what kinda stuff do you like to play, what kind of setup do you have, and how long have you been playing....ill start...

i play everything from dispatch and goo goo dolls to metallica and in flames....ive got a blue schecter omen 6, small fender frontman 25 watt amp that is on its way out, crybaby wah, digitech digi-delay, digitech rp-50, and channel switcher....ive been playing for about 4 years.....

im really curious to see how many of you guys play

i play. i was in a band but was given the boot for "musical differences"... sorry, i just didn't wanna make 80's metal.

my EQ ain't as fancy as yours--a couple epiphone guitars, a couple practice amps, a 300 watt amp/mixer set-up w/ speakers/monitors, and really just a ZOOM 606 that i wanna trade in for a Digitech.

i'm forced to play along w/ stuff since i'm not in a band--lots of metallica, tool, NIN, APC, dark new day, linkin park, pink floyd, creed. looking to expand my horizons, though.

I pick around myself. I just don't get into it like I used to, though. I have 3 right now ....

1.) Alvarez steel string acoustic. My favorite.
2.) Johnson nylon string classical. My beater. The Willie Nelson guitar.
3.) Strat.

Have had others, too. I don't play much anymore. BTW, I'm glad I never really got into that "tab" crap.

I got an Alvarez acoustic guitar, got it when I was about 9-10 years old but lost interest and never really learned to play all that well.

Been thinking about getting an electric and learning again, just for ****s and giggles.

i have been playing for about 3 years. i have a gibson les paul standard, a cheap strat, and a takamine acoustic and my dad has a bunch of other ones. for an amp i have an old Crate 200w. i play a lot of stuff, mostly classic rock like led zepplin

I've been playing for 9 years. I was classically trained for the first 3 of those up until I was about 15. I've been in multiple bands but my favorite experience was (and the only time I got paid for playing!) was in a Sublime coverband that also dabbled in some 311 and some classic rock and roll stuff too.

Gear:
- I have a custom Carvin AC-375, which is a thinline acoustic. Abalone inlays, mahogany neck, and koa back and sides. Beauitful piece.

- Ibanex RG-470, which came with the Wizard 2 neck and its super thin. Its also got a floating tremelo bridge... I used it for metal / neo-classical speedy type stuff.

- Epiphone Les Paul studio, heritage cherry sunburst. Nice piece, it's my every day ax that I just kinda tool around on.

- My pride and joy, I actually built a guitar a couple summers ago. Patterned the body off a strat and put the hardware together myself. The pickguard actually is my Irish clan's colors and my last name in Gaelic is burned onto the headstock. I'll dig up some pics after work. I use it for slide and blues, the action is a little higher then I like.. it kinda sounds like a Telecaster.

I picked up a Taylor acoustic (I think it's a 914) from a friend of mine a few years ago. I taught myself how to read music, but I prefer just to play from listening. I'm not in a band and don't care to be. My ego isn't big enough to be in one.

I usually play whatever my girlfriend wants me to....

BTW - chicks LOVE when you sing to them.

I've been tryin for about 2yrs, but only about 6-8mos worth learnin, it's on and off cuz im way behind in college now.. so no time till summer really.
I'll just say im not great but tryin to learn everything i can when i do.
know a lil jazz, play some googoodolls, yellowcard, but now full songs yet. pearl jam n' some old cords n' pickin from the old man. but it's like leonard cohan and old timer stuff, iknow a lotta that and its fun to play.

but as for anything else i need tons of pract! haha.

My wife bought me an Abilene (cheapie) accoustic about 4-5 yrs ago. I bought a used SilverTone about 3 years ago. And recently I bought a Mexican Fender Strat (black/with white pickguard). I have a Fender Frontman 25R as well and haven't really used it much (usually play through headphones), but it is enough to make the neighbors call the cops if I wanted to "crank it up". All I have for pedals is the Behringer v-amp X, which is kind of neat to play with, but I find that I am messing with all the toys on it instead of concentrating on learning/practicing. For as long as I have had the guitars, I really don't know much about playing them. I seem to get the bug to play after we have gone to concerts. Something about live music will get the blood pumping for awhile. I noticed someone mentioned Yellowcard above. Saw them live in Vegas last month with Maroon 5 at the Hard Rock Hotel. I had not heard any of their music until the concert. I really liked their music/show. They rocked pretty hard--I was quite pleasantly surprised.
What's the best way to learn to play? 1) Books and/or videos and learn yourself or 2) Private lessons ? Just thought I would ask that because I don't know the best way to learn and sometimes I just get bored with it and feel that I don't really know too much for as long as I have been tinkering with these things!!

personally, i taught myself how to play....basically just learned how to read tabs, and also bought a few music books of my fav bands with the tabs in them along with the music....ive been told i have a great ear for the music and i have good timing, so it came somewhat easy to me the best way to learn obviously is just to practice...i practice about an hour a day, and like 3 hrs on most fridays with my buddy....

The song is called #40. It's got some sorta strange chords in it, but it's easy to work around, IMO. A cool thing about the song is that it's easy to make up your own lyrics to it.....I always play and just make up **** as I'm playing.

When my girlfriend's sorority "sisters" start drinking they're always like, "Joe, play us our song!!!!" because they have a guitar sitting in their living room for some reason....

got an Electric with I turned 16 not sure of the name and have a couple acoustics and an amp lol. Wanted to learn how to play haven't yet. The one acoustic i got was my grand fathers it was given to me when he passed away. The other was my ex gf's husband's she said he ordered it i think its one of them Estaban (sp?) ones. My grand father also has a Gibson Hummingbird SWEET guitar. My uncle took that one though and I heard that if i Learned to play it would be mine but Like i said i havent'd learned yet. I can play the first couple notes of smoke on the water LOL thats only cause a friend taught me

HA HA wondered how long it would take people to catch that. Yes she was married. I went to school with her and she got married in High school but always had a thing for me. He cheated on her a few times. After she had her 2nd kid me and a couple friends went to vist them and we started talking and hangig out as friends. Well he got the idea to let us have sex to "make things even" and I was also kinda suppsoe to pay her for it which was the deal he made up but she said no after that first time we started dating. He knew about it she wanted a divorce anyway I'm glad she was such a stupid jackass that she left I'm so much more happier now

Cool thread! I've been playing for 10 years now. I own four guitars right now:

- Kramer Striker electric, double humbucker active pickups. Looks bad-ass in all black with chrome machine heads and Floyd Rose tremolo. I play metal and other hardrock on this guitar, lot of Metallica.

- Silvertone steel string acoustic/electric, cutaway dreadnought style. Mahagony/pine wood. By far my favorite guitar that I own, I play it the most. I play this one at least every other day, lately I've been playing "Blackbird" and "I'm Only Sleeping" by the Beatles alot, along with other Beatles songs and other general strumming. I LOVE fingerpicking, hence "Blackbird".

- Alvarez steel string acoustic, full size dreadnaught style. I don't like to play this one as much as the Silvertone even though it was more expensive and supposed to be better, the Silvertone feels and sounds better to me...I'll probably sell this one soon.

- Old school Holiday electric with old style active pickups. The typical 1950s era electric guitar, I don't play it ever but it looks cool. It doesn't play very well.

In the past I've owned a Jackson Charvel (VERY nice guitar, should have kept) and two Fender Strats (okay guitars).

I mainly play acoustic stuff to relax with, I especially enjoy playing old Beatles songs. When I first learned guitar I was into hard rock/metal, so I still play some of that too.

I never learned to read music and either play everything by tab or by ear. Someday I should take lessons and learn the real way.
