any S197 Air Conditioning Tricks?

another major heat wave / 5 days in 100+ degree heat

and it causes me to curse my new baby ......

lets face it, these cars have crappy air conditioners.

anyone know any tricks to improving the poor performance of these units?

Same here. Cabin does not cool like I would like. I believe because its non-CFC so its better for the environment.

I had the dealer test it and they said there was nothing wrong with it but the dealer is in Daly City which is always foggy, windy, and cold. They said it went down to about 30 something degrees... yeah right.

If anyone thinks of a solution let me know too.

Dark cars and the charcoal interiors don't help either.

um, I live in South Florida and I have no A/C problems my car stays uber chilly.

But hell i also have 15% window tint on all windows.

yup putin tint on the windows helps a lot. did it on my pickup and it worked like magic

The windows on my car are tinted, which helps a little.. Having a black car, I understand what you mean about the AC being somewhat underpowered..

When getting into my car after work, I lower the windows a few inches and just use the regular AC until the cabin cools down.. Then, after a little bit, the windows go up, and I turn the AC to MAX.

I could be completely wrong, but I heard the MAX sucks air from the CABIN, then cools it, and returns it to the CABIN... I don't immediately run the MAX AC because it will be sucking air from the cabin that is much hotter than outside air..

So, if it's 100 outside, the air inside the car has to be 120/125, right???

QFT.

Open the windows a bit while running AC on fresh air for a about a minute until the air starts to cool down a bit. Close up the windows and stick it on recirculate (max does this too). It'll cool down fast, the AC on this car is a lot better than my Focus. Which will struggle at idle in the Fresno 100* heat. lol

A/C refrigerant has been non-CFC since they introduced R134a in the early 90s...

When they performance test A/C, they follow a chart based on ambient temperature and relative humidity to determine desired output temperature, so it doesn't matter much where the dealer is as long as it is not a HUGE difference in temp. Generally, if it can cut 30 degrees out of the air, it is working good. 100-30 is still 70, add humidity to that, and that kinda heat makes it seem like it isn't working. I doubt that it got down to 30 degrees though, MAYBE high 30s if the conditions were right, but I doubt it. The evaporator temperature will not go below 32 for mroe than a split second, to avoid freezing it, so outlet temp cannot be much cooler than 38-40.

Whoever said MAX AC reuses cabin air is correct. That is the difference between MAX and normal A/C.

But as far as the issue goes, mine seems to work great. On average heat days it kicks ass. WHen it is 95-100 and real humid it takes a while to cool off, but I still think it works better than most other cars I've driven. No complaints whatsoever.

i'm on iowa, only had mine last summer and it got pretty hot and i rarely ran it all the way down on the cold.
:OT: i know the whole mustang thing suposed to be knobs and levers and less electronic, but i would think premiums would get electronic climate control. I had a T-bird w/ it and loved it. set the temp and where i wanted it to blow and forget about it. just had to toss that out there.

The A/C works just as good as most cars I've had. The cars that cooled down faster for me were the ones that had REAR A/C VENTS as well.

Wish I could help, but my AC blows VERY cold, even in the 105 degree heat (+humidity) we had here in VA a couple weeks ago. I actually can really stand the AC on fan level 4, and I only push it to 3 when it is really hot out.

Perhaps you can try another dealer in the area, on a hotter day, and see if they'll tweak and or re-charge it for you.

I get hot easily and have had no problems with the AC in my 2007 GT. I get down right cold at times. I use it on max all the time.
I have red interior and the dark dash. If it is real hot outside, I will let the windows down slightly until the car has a chance to cool a bit. That does help chase the hot air out.
But I have no complaints. My car is cold compared to my wife's 2007 Mariner.

A/C Works great when set to Max A/C Mode.

A/C Works great in other ways only if I'm moving. In traffic it doesn't cool like it should.

**side note**

don't forget, the RECIRC function can be used in other modes beside MAX A/C....just push the button

recirc will keep that cabin air MUCH cooler than without recirc

Mine works alright until it starts hitting ~90-100 degrees. Then its better than no a/c but still not cold like my last mustang. Although my last mustang's air was so cold, if I turned off the a/c for a couple minutes, it would be blowing "fog" for the first 5-10 seconds because of the temp disparity.

It was over 90 here today and it took me a few miles for the temp to be just "ok". It certainly does not cool wine like my 2001. I'm wondering whether I should just bring it back and have them re-charge it. I also think they tested it for leaks and there were none.

lets face it / these are !@(%*&#'n crappy coolers (and we're stuck with them)
