I did it the old fashion way also. I think it looks better that way.I did the front and rear of struts then on top where the fender sits, then right behind where the headlights are., closed up some stuff from the rear of the firewall also where the original hood hing was and the window wiper motor was,
Well, it was 110 hours cause it sat for two months in bare body filler/metal so it rusted a lil bit so I ground out alot, then I decided to do the tubular lower rad, box the sway bar mounts, weld the rest of the holes on the upper rad support (prop rod holes, radiator hold down mounts, and another that I didn't shut the first time), the unused holes on the top of the fender aprons that are not totally covered by the fenders. I also originally didn't plan on doing from the shock towers back, an then I decided to run the wires behind the dash so it would looks stupid if I didn't finish that part. So all that extra work really added the time up. And its STILL not even close to being done. I done want any ridiculous waves in the bay. I do body work/restoration work everyday so I want it to be pretty damn perfect.
Hi, I've read all these posts and your cars look really sweet. I'm thinking of taking a welding class at my local community college and then trying to weld all the holes in my bay, bondo them and finally paint the engine bay. I plan on having a pro body shop repaint the rest of the car though. I don't mind spending the time to re-do the engine bay but would like to know what you guys think. Do you think it's possible to get a reasonably good finished bay or should I shoot for finishing it to bondo and letting the body shop do the painting?. Thanks
I did mine when I was 17 years old, had never welded before, and never worked with bondo. I went from a mess to a welded up bay, and painted myself over a couple months.
I redid it when I painted the car black and gold. Didn't take much more than sanding, bondo prime and paint. Maybe a couple weeks.
