Safety Recall Notice 15S21/ NHSTA Recal 15v- 319

2013 Mustang

Your VIN #############

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford Motor Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety existe in your vehicle with the VIN above.

WHAT IS THE ISSUE?

In certain vehicles. the front driver side aribag inflator housing may rupture and deply abnormally in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver side frontal airbag. An inflator rupture could result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death..

WHAT WILL FORD AND YOUR DEALER DO?

Ford Motor Company is working closely with it suppliers to produce parts for this repair. When parts become available for the safety recall 15S21. FOrd Motor Company will notify you vial meail to schedule a service appointment with your dealer to have the driver's frontal airbag inflator replced free of charge ( parts and labor). Coverage is automatically transferred to subesquent owners.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

When parts are available, Ford Motor COmpany will send a letter to inform you that parts are available and to contact your dealer to schedule a repair.

Nice to know we are driving a car that if in an accident can be the cause of killing us. Feel real good about driving this car now.

I keep wondering why they did not recall the steppor motors on the instrument cluster ..Guess they didn't blow up in your face ?

Just got the letter as well. Just hoping I don't need the airbag anytime soon.

I bought my car 3 weeks ago ('12 Boss.) Before I signed the paperwork the salesman told me about the Airbag recall, and that as of now there is no fix for it. There is also thread here about a dealership refusing to take a Mustang in trade due to the recall:

was on the phone with FOMOCO for 20 minutes today. Got NO WHERE. They have no idea when the parts will be available or at the dealer for install. Bottom line is I am calling the GSM of the dealer I bought the car from and demanding a free loaner. No way am I letting the wife drive a car that can kill her.

If they already knew about the danger and the recall how could they sell the car ? Money more important then a driver getting flacked ?

I don't believe so, for two reasons:First its not an actual recall yet,it is an advanced notice, so legally they are allowed to sell the car. Second and to me more importantly, allow me to quote from my own post:

" Before I signed the paperwork the salesman told me about the Airbag recall..."

The Ford Dealership disclosed to me that there is an open recall on the car before any paperwork was signed and any money changed hands.With that information it was my decision to go forward with the purchase. Truth was I was looking at a pristine 1 owner 2012 Boss 302 with a clean Carfax, only 2,608 miles on it, at a price that I was comfortable with. No way was I not buying that car.

Yeah ,but for it to be a recall someone knew Why it was a recall . Did they actually tell you that they may explode in your face ?

No because it's not going to explode in my face.That is not the issue.I'm not going to be driving down the street and bang the airbag deploys for no reason. The problem with the airbag is that in the event of an accident with airbag deployment plastic pieces from the ignitor may be propelled out and injure me. So unless I crash into something I will be safe.

The letter says metal fragments ,i saw something on the news a few nights ago and it showed the canisters from the Japanese cars ripped open and pieces missing .
I wasn't meaning that they just explode but it is simple to set those bags off ,hitting a dog like a friend of mine ,some jackass pulling out in front of you and you cant stop in time .I just do not see how they can sell it if there is a possibility of it turning into a granade ,I sure don't like the idea that it could happen .I am going to disable mine if i have to unplug it ,remove a fuse or what ever .

Again it t was my choice to buy the car. They gave me the info before I made the purchase and I bought it anyway. If the dealership that sold me the car didn't tell me about the recall I would agree but they did tell me and they told me upfront..I don't see how they did anything wrong. In fact my wife and I looked at several Mustangs that day, most at Ford Dealers, and this dealer is the only one who said anything to me about the recall.If anyone at fault here it is me.
After some quick online research it seems so far there has only 1 Mustang driver that has received an injury that may be from the airbag From The Mustang News:
As disclosed in November 2014, Ford is aware of one airbag deployment that might be related to the issue, in which a driver’s leg was injured by a metal fragment when the airbag deployed after a crash. Ford has not seen any other inflator ruptures on Ford vehicles in the field or in testing to date.
It seems that our cars are included in the recall because the Airbags are manufactured by Takata not because hundreds of people are being injured . But I am thinking about disconnecting the airbag if possible.

There is a worldwide recall on Takata airbags installed in millions of cars, all makes and models. It has been in the news for months now. I don't expect ford to instantaneously have the parts. We will just have to wait. I'm not overly concerned, happens.

I got the letter last week. It is the second letter Ford has sent me regarding this issue indicating I will be contacted when the parts are available. A deeper issue is I may have to take a $$ hit if I need to sell my car now. The Bank, Lawyer, Hospital or School demanding payment doesn't care about the airbag recall.

I understand the scope of the air bag recall across the auto industry and the resultant delays. I own 3 fords: Mustang, Fusion and a C-max. All 3 of these cars have outstanding recall notices but no resolution because "parts are not available." Only the Mustang is for air bags, the other two cars are recalled for electronic control modules that are not available. I'm becoming concerned about the lack or parts and Ford's commitment to support its products, not to mention its quality control. If suppliers are so squeezed that they can't produce repair parts I'm worried about the entire business plan Ford is following.

I also own a 1979 Triumph TR7. Its over 35 years old. Triumph cars have not been manufactured since 1981. I can still buy almost any part for that car as suppliers continue to manufacture them in spite of the fact that they are obsolete by today's standards. Its a niche market, but it is apparently more profitable than manufacturing replacement parts for contemporary vehicles.

Apple made and sold over 3 million Watches (despite it being deemed a retail failure) since May of this year, yet Ford can't ramp up production of a 100,000 electronic module replacements. Maybe Ford doesn't see the risk in not supporting the parts suppliers and replacement part pipeline.

I don't think that Ford can ramp up the production on the modules because they are made by a different company. I wonder though if the new cars being sold off the lots like the fusion have the same airbags in them. My son's girlfriend just bought a new one. Not sure if it's a 2015 or 2016 though.
I understand your rant though. I have owned mostly Fords myself and have been though a few odd recalls like this. Nothing to do at this point but be patient and if anyone is concerned then the answer is just don't drive the car.

problem is the company takata in japan hide the problem for years and also makes the air bags for almost every other car world wide and has to make replacements for all of them, which mean millions of air bags world wide this one is going to be a long time in getting resolved

Anybody have thoughts on what I can do ? I purchase a 2014 Mustang GT california special on July 3rd. The carfax showed recall reported and I asked the salesman was it taken care of the. The salesman blew it off and knew nothing about it and said they probably fixed it. No one else at dealer disclosed anything about it. I went today to Carmax to get an estimate of what it might be worth if i sold it. They told me they would only give me a wholesale number and could not sell my car themselves due to open airbag recall. WTF !!! I feel like the dealer should not have even sold me the car with an open recall on it. Now I am finding out that the parts are not even available to fix the recall. Do I have any recourse since the dealer did not disclose anything about this to me before buying ? I would not have purchased the car if the dealer told me that it had an open recall that it could not fix. I kind of want them to take the car back or hire a lawyer. I don't feel good driving around in a car that could possibly hurt or kill me if I get in an accident and airbag deploys.

Any thoughts would help greatly.
