anyone else with throw-out bearing problems?

I would think that if there was enough slack in the clutch cable that the TOB wouldn't be spinning because it wouldn't be touching the spinning pressure plate fingers, at least not much. As long as the engine is running, whenever pressure is applied to the TOB then it is spinning. That's how I understood it worked anyways. I just wish it wouldn't make any noise at all! lol

EDIT: I meant to say that I agree that it squeel if low on grease and that it shouldn't make noise once the clutch pedal is pressed.

I had a 01 Silver GT and I had the same problem. I took it to the ford dealer 4 times.
1st time they basically told me I was on crack, because it didn't make any noise when the machanic drove it.
2nd time they said they replaced the TOB. They also basically said I didn't know how to drive and that I was riding the clutch.
3rd time was about 50 miles later, they replaced the TOB, clutch cable.
4th time about 100 miles later, highly pissed this time. I called the 1-800 corprate headquarters and talked to a customer service rep and told them all the problems I was having and if they didn't fix it this time, I was gonna file paper work under the Florida lemon law. That really got them hopping. The Service Manager called me at home about 40 minutes later saying they wanted to do whatever I wanted to make me happy. So they replaced the Clutch, Pressure plate, flywheel, TOB, TOB retainer and clutch cable. They asked me if I wanted a new transmission put in. I declined to have a new transmission put in.

Well about 5000 miles later it happened again. Well a buddy at a speed shop suggested I try an aftermarket clutch cable. He said the stock cables were crap. If it didn't work, we would install the old one and I could take it back to the dealer. So instead of taking it back, I went and bought a Steeda Firewall clutch adjuster, and adjustable clutch cable. We installed it on a saturday, and I didn't have any other problem for the remaining 60,000 miles I had the car. That a pain in the arse.

Oh and all that happened with the following mods. Subframe connectors, C&L mass air meter, 70mm TB, under-drive pulleys, bassani X-pipe, Magnaflow cat-back, MIL eliminators, lowered 1 1/2 inches with Tokico adjustable shocks and struts. They didn't say anything about warranty problems even after I call the ford 1-800 number.

Bottom line: call the 1-800 number, have it fixed again at the dealer, then install an aftermarket firewall adjuster and cable. problem gone. My .02.

yup, that usually fixes the problem when it's adjusted correctly. did you have the squeeling noise with the clutch engauged or the grinding noise when pressing the clutch pedal in?

When the car was idling at a light it would squeak like crazy, I when would push the clutch it in would go away. Driving down the road I would have clutch chatter.

cool, thanks for the info...the chatter is a big problem with these stock quadrants and weak cables. i've been lucky and only had a little squeek every now and then.

A couple of quick points:
You can't actually greese our TOB. They are a closed bearing. The greese may cover the input shaft a little and the clutch fingers, but it doesn't get inside the bearing where it would be 'dry'

Per Ford the TOB should have 'preload' (in constant contact with the clutch fingers) at all times. It is a stupid design, but that is how they designed it. I've been asking and looking all over and this is the concenses. Using an aftermarket fWA and quadrant is a different story all together though. Maximum motorsports for example says to adjust the TOB just off of the fingers.

Many times the squeeling isn't the TOB at all, but a ToB that is not preloaded, or not adjusted right so as the clutch pedal is pushed in the TOB contacts the fingers unequally and thus the noise. It goes away once the TOB is equally pressed against the fingers. A bearing would squeel all of the time if it were dry right? Some folks have A TOB that squeels all the time unless the pedal is depressed, some get the squeel right when the clutch is first pressed then it goes away. The above can be the cause of both.

My suggestion is an aftermarket FWA and Quadrant. With this set up it is difficult to make the adjustment to keep the TOB off of the fingers and have a good clean clutch engaugement. I had my car on blocks and had the wife pushing the clutch pedal while I was underneath the car after adjusting the FWA all the way in or clockwise and then going counter clockwise until I got the right combo of TOB off the fingers and good clutch engaugement.

The automatic adjustment on the clutch cable allows the fork to make the bearing ride the pressure plate release fingers.
I installed an adjustable cluth cable over a year ago and have had no more noise.

my trans is out right now, and i can see TOB clear as day. mine did sqweel, and i now see how bad my TOB. i can spin it with finger, and it makes this grinding noise...

lightly lube the new bearing and the inside where it slides on when you put it back together. Did you decide what you are going to do?

yea, i got T-45 dirt cheap. So i'm just going to swap it out, so its up and running again...

But i got this sneaking suspition that it might not have been tranny all along...

Mine squiles all of the time unless I push the clutch in.. I am going to install my Cool Blue performance cable/FWA and quadrant this weekend... Hope all of this noise does away...

Had mine replaced last wednesday and on friday it started to screech every once in a while. It only happens if the clutch is 100% depressed. If I depress say 90% it doesn't do it?

ALSO, my clutch pedal was showing some resistance depressing and wasn't smooth. I replaced the cable and it seemed to fix it for a few days and now its doing it again? What the hell do I need to do Its not hanging up on anything and I have a fwa and quadrant. Having long tubes these tob problems aren't cheap.

I just had my TOB replaced and clutch too. it all started because of a squeak. the squeak went away.

Now we've had a lot of rain here like 3 strait days of it and I drove around in it.

The squeal has returned!

I agree that the TOB looses lubrication and it has to get lubed.

What are are you going to do. At least it's posted enough that we all know it's a know issue.
