anyone have a chevy turbo 400 trans in their car?

Hi, i was talking to a kid that came into my work. i saw he had a mustang so we started talking. he told me he had a 347 stroker etc. He also told me he had a chevy turbo 400 transmission in his car. is that possible? anyone here have it?

The guy who owned one of the shops I used to go to had a turbo 5.0 with a TH400. I think all he had to do was chage the input shaft. It was the only tranny that the thing didnt blow apart

If I'm not mistaken the Turbo 400 is the best auto trans Chevy made...and yes you can use it in the Mustang, however, I am not a fan of cross-breeding.

The 400 is incredibly strong but it also eats up the most power (requires quite a bit to drive it).

anyother automatic tranny's out their worth using? i am building a 347 that will be pushing out 390 to the rear wheels. i will also use 150 shot sometime down the road. What do you guys recomend? i want something that is a manual automatic, so i can shift it like a stick. also a want a 4 spd and i want a transbrake. thanks for any help

Shouldn't be hard to put a TH400 in the car, as there are a number of companies that make adapters to use a powerglide.

If I wanted a 3 speed, I would use a c4, as they currently can be built to handle nearly anything a 5.0 can dish out. Even an aod can be made stout. Plus these take standard Ford driveshafts, converters, shifters, etc.

If I had enough power to need more, I would go with the glide.

Well a powerglide on the street isnt something I would want. You can build AODs to handle most power needs. If you were running a big block I would build a C6 just to keep things simple. I think the reason they install TH400s is the weight difference between the C6 and TH400.

Its called The Rock Crusher. Its a 4 speed tranny built by Muncie that has straight cut gears. They whine but are very hard to destroy. They came in factory hotrods and 50's cars and trucks.

They are like the toploader but lighter.

You could do a Lentech AOD. I have one in my '89 LX coupe and I'm pretty happy with it. My car made 534 rwhp and it's held up really well. I ordered mine with the full manual valvebody, overdrive, and transbrake. It actually had the automatic valvebody at first, but we encountered a few problems with it so Lentech sent me the full manual setup at no charge. I'm still using the stock AOD shifter and I think it adds a great 'sleeper' effect. No one ever believes that the car is making 534 rwhp through the 'stock' AOD . Anyway, I would say do a built AOD if you want that overdrive gear. There are several other companies besides Lentech that make stout AODs, I just can't remember them off-hand. Otherwise, if you change your mind and can live with a 3-speed, do a built C4. C6s are strong, but they're quite a bit heavier.

I have one in my 355 S-10. The first 3 gears are straight cut and 4th is helical. it is quiet. The first 3 are loud. I pound and pound on it. It is tough as nails. Friend of mine has one mated to a 302 Ford. He loves it.

The Turbo 400 was the strongest. The 700R4 was next in line for strength. Also the AUto that cam in the Buick Grand Nationals were a 200r4. They were tough also. The Grand national I had shifted very hard.

Powerglides are actually quite good for the street. My friend has a BBC chevelle with a GLIDE and 4.88 gears. It nice to drive.

I shifted into second doing 65 in a 2003 Vette. That was pretty sick. My friend works at a dealership and he let me drive somebody's vette that was coming in for a check up. I kinda felt bad cause I really beat the crap outta of it....but if it broke it was my friends his fault.

hwere can i get these tranny's from? im not looking to spend alot, anyhelp is appreciated. iw as going to replace my tranny with a tko which everything included will cost me 1900. if i can get a good auto tranny that i can shift like a stick for 2500 or less that will be good. thanks
