Anyone have any comments about 87 vs 91 octane?

I use regular. I don't see a need for using anything over 87 octane in the car until I do some serious performance work. Plus ford says to use it.

Why? 87 or 89 will make more power, unless you need 93 due to advanced timing or to prevent detonation.

I run 87 all the time, but maybe once a month ill use 93. Just makes me better. Also, i every couple thousand miles, i pour in some fuel injector cleaner.

OT:Can a dirty fuel filter significantly hurt gas mileage?

I get a really nasty ping with 87 when I romp on it but for just normal driving it is OK. 89 seems to do OK and every now and then for good measure I'll do a tank of 92.

I've always run on 93 octane ever since I got the Superchip. They told me I had to run on 93...not sure why...

93 after reflash... 87 before... "seems" like my mileage is better, defintely runs better... I'm sure that it's the combo, but the posts are corect, no need to run higher octane til the mods go thru...

On a related note, what's up with the owner's manual saying that occasional, slight detonation is okay, and within normal operating conditions?!

I thought detonation is always a bad thing, but Ford says (in print) not necessarily so...

Any thoughts?
