Well, I came out to my car after being in a salvage yard for 30 min, and some *$$ tried to use a screwdriver to unlock my door!!!! Must have been a real idiot. Anyway, now I have to replace the lock cylinder. I have an extra from my spare door, but has anyone had a lock rekeyed? I will check with a few locksmiths tomorrow, but I'm just wondering right now.

Thanks!

i have on another car. it cost me about 3 bucks. i also had him rekey a new lock (i did not like the idea of using the old one, but the new factory replacement i got was a different length, and i did not know if it would fit, so i had both done). the new one cost me 20 bucks to have keyed.
just call around - it is no biggie for a locksmith, and they will tell you costs.

i have removed one on a stang - as i think you have. piece of cake. remove the linkage, take the retaining clip off and that is about it. small hands and arms helps.
good luck.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think it would be a big deal, thank goodness. At least he, or it, didn't get into the car. Not like I had anything of value, and my Club AND my brake/ clutch lock were in place and in plain sight, and the radio face was removed, along with the fuel pump relay and kill. Time to get a killer (I wish literally!!!) security system!

i got a set from CSK autoparts for about $35 for my 86. came with glovebox, lock, doors, hatch and ignition, as well as a key. NAPA can get them too and they are incredibly easy to install on Mustangs. hope this helps and is not too late.

Would it be possible to take off the door and hatch lock cylinders, take them to a locksmith, then have them rekeyed them to your ignition key? Even if they charged $20 a lock, it would still be $140 less than the police one-key set. I don't know squat about locks though, so I just need to know if the locks could be configured to work with the ignition key.

i would probably call a locksmith and ask. i dont even recall off the top of my head, but i think the non ignition key stuff is one sided, and the ignition is two sided. im sure it could be done, just a matter of the cost. with as often as we swap ignition switches, i dont know that anyone has done it.

No, you can't do that. The keys are offset in different directions door key is like '-, and the ignition key is like ,-' They will not fit the other lock cylinder.

Each key only requires one side to work, though. I had two Fords for a while, and I had one key cut on one side of the door key, and the other one on the other side. That way one door key opened both cars, and same with the ignition key. I just marked which side was up for one car so I wouldn't keep putting the key in the wrong way.

I guess it was a nice thought. I'd like only having one key to keep track of, but I wouldn't like paying $200 for the set.
