I haven’t a lot of the wires go to the ignition switch box thing near the steering wheel

My first thought, after seeing the last pic, plug an old house fone into it.
of course my second thought was don't miss a car payment, that may be a tracker/disabler like the 'buy-here pay-here car lot used to use.
definitely don't look like a Ford part

Open it up. My guess is some kind of anti-theft device like a lojack.

With an Ethernet port it could be some kind of audio box. I installed a stereo in my Tacoma and my bass knob uses an Ethernet/RJ-45 connector.

I’m wondering if it is part of the audio system, not factory of course. Maybe an old Bluetooth transmitter?

With “a lot of the wires go to the ignition switch box thing near the steering wheel” I keep coming back to some kind of anti theft device or possibly a remote start module. I installed a lot of car audio back in the early 2000’s and never saw anything like that.

It has those grey, communications colored cables, and maybe those very small gauge wires? I’m betting either an upgrade on the stereo for Bluetooth components or alarm system component.
