Those who have done an AOD swap,

Where did you get yours?

Salvage Yard? What would be a good price? Did you rebuild first?

Anyone heard about Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions?

All cleaned up, new seals and clutches. Dyno tested... $575 on ebay...

I bought a 5.0 engine from them off ebay and the service was great!!! Engine runs good also in my daily driver... I got my AOD for my 66 fastback off of craig's list.

I tried to get an AOD from Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions once. The story sounded too good to be true -- way low price for a fully rebuilt, dyno tested AOD with a warranty and everything. Turned out to be a lot of smoke & mirrors and after weeks of the runaround had to cancel the order and try elsewhere.

If you're considering a new unit, try K.A.R. Auto Group (www.karmustang.com). I know that they are a dealer for an AOD company and do the conversions, so they can kit up everything you need.

My C4 leaks and has been acting up lately (won't go in any foward gears until it warms up). I've been wanting to go to an AOD, but was hoping to wait until I could get an entire EFI roller motor & trans together with all hardware, computer & wiring. With my situation I was thinking, just do AOD the conversion for now. It's still drivable, so I'll keep looking for options.

I got mine out of a '91 Lincoln Continental Mark VII LSC. Got it, along with the motor, and an extra II hood, for $248 or something like that. look for some low mile, clean cars in a junkyard and you can get a great deal

for mounts etc, Ron Morris makes a transmount and he also has a harness to plug into/adapt the neutral safety switch. To use your stock shifter, you will need to adapt the lever in the body. If Ron Morris does not have this item, Mustang Plus does have it, makes life easier

I bought a crate-tranny, a TCI unit completely rebuilt and strapped to a pallette for truck transport. IIRC the price was about $1.5K for 425 hp/tq including a TC. Shipping was extra.

If I had unlimited funds I'd get a crate-tranny from Lentech, but they cost about twice as much.

yeah the lentech tranny's are awesome but man are they expensive. another option however, would be to get a decent AOD and buy the lentech valvebody, it's only like 300 bucks or so.

I think that's the route I'm going. Did you replace any seals, gaskets or internal parts first?

Anyone rebuild an AOD? What about the AOD rebuild video? Is it helpful enough?

I've disassembled/reassembled a 4-speed before, but my automatic experience has been just seals & gaskets. Oh yeah, I R&R the valve body on my C4 to replace the shifter shaft seal & o-ring.

No rebuild or seal replacement at all. Just threw it in. It has a pan leak that will be fixed next spring as that's when I plan on the rebuild. (The pan looks as though someone dropped the tranny from a 6' ladder). I will probably also get a shift kit as well installed. I used to have a rebuilt C4 with the B&M shift kit and it was nice to have it shift from 1st to 2nd gear with a slight *chirp* to the tires even with 3.00 gears

The AOD stock has such a gentle and easy shift between gears that it's lame

Think about the application there...Grand Marq or even LSVIII...those are cruise-barges....and they shift like one. The AODs put in 5.0 Stangs weren't much better as far as shifting, plus they are known to be weak if you have anything more than 300fwhp...mainly the hollow 2-peice input shaft....but numerous other areas to improve.

My advice is to postpone the upgrade until your budjet allows the purchase or upgrade (DIY) of strengthened components and an altered shift pattern. I found the cost of buying an complete unit with the upgrades from the aftermarket to be roughly equal to buying a new one from Ford and only somewhat higher than buying a salvage unit and replacing all the parts myself.

Mine does that too, with 3.00 I'm pretty sure it's not the original C4 as I found a couple '68 date codes on the components.

Yeah, I'll just do the bubblegum and bandaid thing to the C4 until I have more funds or 'til it craps out completely and HAVE to change it anyway.

So TCI has a pretty good reputation with their rebuilds. Isn't PA Racing a good source too?

I'd put TCI and B&M at the same spot on the list. Reputable, better than stock, good ROI, not top-of-the-line.
