AODE still leaking. I am out of ideas. Help!

Guys,

My AODE still is leaking. Passenger side rear. I have tried everything.

I replaced the pan and rubber gasket. I had come to the conclusion that the old pan was warped, or so I thought.

Well a new Ford pan and rubber gasket and still leaking. The mating surfaces were clean, bolts were clean and the pan wasn't overtightened.
With the front of the car jacked up, the tranny leaks rear passenger side.

Is there anything else on the passenger side of the AODE that could be causing the leak besides the pan?

Is there a overfill hose, how about the tran cooler lines ?

Any ideas would be great. Cause I am completely out of ideas. THANKS.

Did you check the transmission cooler lines and make sure they are tight? That's the only thing on the right side of the transmission that I can think of besides the dip stick dube (which I don't think would leak).

Another note,

The leak gets the worst when I shut the engine off. It barely leaks, if any, when the car is running.

There are only three places that a tranny can leak. Front seal, rear seal and pan.

First change the pan gasket and filter. Tighten the bolts gently and don't over torque them, 15 lbs MAX. Do it in a cross wise pattern. Clean the entire underside with simple green, a brush and the spray it down. Fill the tranny, let it sit and dry for an hour, and take the car for a five mile drive. Lay some taped down newspaper under the car on the driveway after your drive, and let it sit for an hour. Check the paper for leaks and the location if any. If the leak comes from the inspection plate or front area, it is most likey the worst, a front seal. Easy to change, you just have to pull the tranny. If it leaks in the tail area, pull the DS and pop in a new rear seal. If there are no leaks, it was the pan.

99% of the time the leak is the pan. Many people, including my self (earlier) over torque the bolts on the pan and the pan will still leak from fking up the gasket. So be careful and just tighten the bolts about as tight as you would a spark plug. That should seal the pan good. DO NOT USE RTV ON THIS GASKET.

You see after you shut the car off, all the fluid drains back in the pan filling the pan higher than the gasket. Thus, the fluid will leak out the pan gasket.

That's my best guess.

I made sure not to over-tighten. I first tightened the bolts with my fingers, then snugged them till the bolts got tight with the ratchet.

Last year that happened to me. There would be NICE CLEAN T fluid when I pulled away after the car sat. It just "went away"

My mechanic said that in the older cars there was a way for the fluid to overflow out if there were too much pressure from overfilling it. I do know for sure that it "can" be overfilled.

For now...check the level tranny fluid level with the dipstick. If it's still fine, just sit and watch it for awhile and see if yours does the same. Check your level every 3 days or so.

You know, this exact same thing is happening to my Lightning. Never leaked tranny fluid until I had the filter changed and complete flush. I know I had a cork gasket on it before and saw that they put on a rubber gasket. I backed out all the bolts and torqued them to factory specs and it still leaks. I now have been trying to track down a cork gasket to test to see if the dang thing will stop leaking. I too am at the end of my rope and I have to look at all that tranny juice painted on my driveway.

My car is doing the same exact thing..Only leaks when its parked and it made a friggin mess out of my driveway.I changed the rear main seal,trans pan and nothing worked.I'm not sure where its leaking from because when I go under to check there is fluid everywhere.I have come up with a solution that will no doubt fix the leak.AODE to Tremec swapp...I will be doing my swap in a week or so,then no more leaks

those are your leak points on AOD
AODE/4R have two additional sensors that can leak.

If AUTO leak when parked, not running - it is most likely dipstick/pan realted becasue the pump is pulling the ATF into the system and sucking the pan dry, when you stop/engine off - the pan fills back up and leaks. .... damn I'm smart

FRONTan, Pump seal, Pump gasket, dipstick
Middle: Pan, dipstick, vent, tail gasket, sensor
rear: PAN, Tailshaft, tail gasket

Notice that PAn is listed first on all.
If you did the pan/gasket and the leak is in the EXACT SAME SPOT, then I would rule out the pan/gasket. I would check the dipstick hole first. Dry it off, drive around, let it sit, then check it for ATF again - if not dry you have a leak! DUH

It can also leak from the VSS if it has a bad o-ring. as i once had.

Mine has leaked from there, the pan gasket, the dipstick, the lines, and the tailshaft gasket. Every time, the fluid would make its way to the back of the pan and drip down from there.

My advice would be to clean the entire area real well, then run the car for a little bit and check for leaks. Keep checking up on it until you find your leak. Good luck.

Check the rear seal where it meets the tailshaft. I had a leak back there and I swore it looked like a pan gasket leak but turned out to be the tailshaft gasket. The tailshaft could also be cracked. Good luck, trans leaks are a PITA.

Have you tried to clean the trans really good then run it a couple time sto see where the leak is (or seems) to be originating?

Check where the wiring harness goes into the tranny. it's at the pass side and at the rear of the tranny. But you have to drop the pan and valve body to replace the o-ring.

I had the same problem you did, except I got tired and took it to a mechanic. What I got from him was that some bolts (not the pan bolts) in the transmission itself needed tightened.

Haven't had a problem since, but it was such a pain im thinking of doing a manual swap in the future.

I looked at it today. Its leaking in the front two corners of the pan.

Pan and gasket are both new. What should I do?

Use a lot of RTV and put it on the gasket too. It shouldn't leak. When you use the RTV, let it sit for a while before you put in the fluid.
