I have always had 5 speeds in my stangs. Im feelin like I miss the gear banging. Would any auto. guys consider making the switch, and if you did is it worth it.
OR is there a better way to enjoy an auto.?

thanx

I like my AODE and do not plan on swapping it. I like the consistency of it. I like it's relative toughness. With a cooler and good fluid, the AODE is tough transmission.

I've got a B&M shift kit and 4.10 gear out back. The gear really helps the AODE's sluggish low end acceleration. The shift kit...eh, I probably wouldn't do it again.

The shift kit didn't seem to do much except move up my shift points....which makes me smack the rev limiter between first and second all the time and between second and third when I'm spraying.

I will get the kit , when you mounted the cooler, did you use the radiator and cooler, or bypass the rad.?

I bypassed it. It seemed much easier to me to do it like that.

You can't beat a tranny cooler for cheap protection- I believe mine was something like $49 from Summit.

I was going to do the swap but after a lot of reading on how strong you could make the aode I thought I would do that first. I must say not only did it meet my expectation it blew me away.

A friend, new at the time, owned a Coleman Taylor shop. He said we will put everything in to it short of a full racing transmission in and if I didn't like it we would do the swap less what the rebuilt cost. I couldn't pass it up. We put the clutches, mechanical diode and all the other goodies.

When I first got it back when it shift it was FIRM not neck jerking firm when just cursing around but when the transmission was broken in, hang on Ethel, it will rip.

From a dead stop it will smoke the tires until you let off the gas and now overdrive is just like third, we used a two inch overdrive band, it will keep pulling until you either run out of road or nerve.

Get a good stall, gears and you will be absolutely amazed at what an automatic can do.

AODE's arent all that bad...Its just knowing how to drive them...Ive got 4.10's and the Transgo SK and I can pull on some 5.0 5-speeds and most 4.6 5-speeds.

But a must for the AODE is a Stall Converter. The stock one blows and is prone to slipping. I would recommend a 2500-2800 Stall w/out Lock-up.

Good Luck and dont let the 5-speed folks talk ya down, we can hold our own too!!

I've got an AODE and believe that I can pull on more T5 5.0s out there than can pull on me.

thats cause you have nitrous........I blew mine up, they arent that strong but with a shift kit, cooler, stall converter and 4.10's you'll be extremely happy with your auto.

REALLY!?

I didn't realize that nitrous injection made that big of a difference!!

From what I've seen, the AODE tends to hold up to higher horsepower levels better than the T5 does.
