Putting my engine back together, and got ARP head bolts, but i noticed quite a few people use studs.. There probably alittle stroger than the bolts, but this is a fairly mild buildup..

Opinions?

I'm taking it that the buildup is the ranger(?). Bolts will be fine for what you are listing.

I think another good thing about studs is you can line the gaskets up perfectly, I have no expeierence changing heads yet, im going to be doing a gt40p swap soon and I will be getting the arp bolts, either way ARP has quality parts, like said before if you have no boost or spray, the bolts should give you all you need.

The gaskets will be lined up from the dowel pins. Studs are reusable, they claim the bolts aren't. I can't see how they wouldn't be, so long as they aren't re-used a hundred times. I'm running ARP head bolts simply because they were cheaper then a stock set.

I think it has something to do with stretching. With studs, stretching really doesn't matter because the nuts will be pulling the head down to the studs which are already in the block.

That's how I understand it as well.

My studs have paid for themselves and then some. I'm rebuilding now and this will be the 3rd time I've used them. Now, that's not to say that some people don't re-use the bolts because I'm sure some do, but I feel more comfortable reusing studs rather than bolts.

Just my opinion

I'm kind of a mechanical newbie but,
how do you get studs out once they are already into the block?

The way I usually get any stud out is to take two nuts and thread them onto the stud, tighten them together, then loosen the bottom nut and it should start screwing the stud out.

Im pretty sure the studs have an allen tip on them. I know they do for Honda applications so I cant see why the Mustang applications wouldn't have one as well.

They might. I have never done studded heads though, so I don't know for sure.

The other good thing about studs is you get a more accurate torque reading when you tighten down the heads. Probably not significant but another point. The problem with studs is you may have problems getting them out or the head off with limited engine room so I have been told. I always try to use studs if possible esp. with a blower.

I'd use the studs for better clamping forces with superchargers and nitrous oxide where bigger explosions and pressures occur towards the headgaskets.

I have reused my head bolts. N/A headbolts. Power adders, use studs.

If you are going as far as to get arp bolts you might as well get the studs... They are more accurate, reuseable and stronger. You might as well get some FMS headbolts if you aren't going to get studs. You can remove the headstuds with a good alen T-handle.

That's like saying, if your going to get the B50 Sportsman Block, you might as well get the Dart Block.

This is where budget's turn into problems. It all adds up.

You can reuse head bolts as well.

My next set will be studs, just because I'm thinking of some boost in the near future.
