A week ago I noticed that my pinion seal is leaking. I removed the plug to check the level and there was pressure behind the plug. The fluid level seem to be full. I decided to check the vent valve on the rearend. The car had been sitting in my garage for 24hrs. As I removed the plug, there was also pressure behind the valve. I could hear it escaping as I removed the valve. Ny question is should there be any preesure there? My Mazda B4000 uses a vent tube instead of a valve. I'm trying to figure out if the vent valve is bad. I blew the valve out with my air compressor a couple of days ago. I removed the plug today and it still had pressure behind it. Has anyone had this type of problem. Thanks Pearl02.

I'm thinking you're correct in the Vent Valve being bad. I've never had any type of pressure in the diff. that I've been able to measure...

I think the valves are cheap too, so it could be a good idea... It's a lot easier than having to swap out pinion seals and axle shaft seals all the time...

Well, it's either that, or pay a few hundred $$'s to rebuild your rear diff when the seals blow..

Some how I knew that was coming . I have the old rearend from my Mazda B. It dosen't have the vent valve but a vent tube. Can I use that until I can get a new vent valve? I'll have to rig up some hose but I thiink it would work. Thanks Pearl02.

I don't know.. Does the Mazda have the 8.8??

I'd have a tough time testing it though, since you'd have 1 of 2 things happen:

- It could work, and you may not need to purchase a new vent valve (sort of unlikely)

- It could fail, and you spew a few quarts of gear oil all over the road, and then have to refill you diff. along w/ re-sealing it...

It is Saturday, could be a good day to give it a try..

Yes, the Mazda has a 8.8 rearend. The Mazda is a Ford Ranger rebabged. I also have those concerns about spiting out fluid all over the road. I'm just looking at this for a temp fix until i can get a new vent valve. Thanks Pearl.

I realize the Mazda is a Ranger, but some of them came w/ the 7.5", not the 8.8 and I thought that the 7.5's came w/ the vent tube..

Yes, the 4 banger and the 3.0 litre V6 has the 7.5. My B4000(4.0 litre) has a 8.8 rearend. I swoped rearends 4 yrs ago. I wanted something with limited slip and better gearing. There's nothing wrong with old rearend. It's complete with axles. I believe Ford went with a vent valve on the Mustang because it looks neater and cleaner on the rearend. Don't quote me on that.
