i have the b & m hammer shifter in my car an the only difference between it and the stock shifter is the look (very cool) an the ratchet action (kinda pita if you drive it daily)...an the stops keep you from over shifting an going into reverse

It wont hold 2nd gear. You need to change to something like the Lentech Street Terminator with the electronic lock out to be able to hold 2nd. But believe me, its well worth it!

This is something dont understand.... When i had my 4 banger in with its automatic trans, when you put the gear shifter in 2nd, on the floor ya know. I thought it would stay in 2nd gear until i pushed it to drive, or whatever. Am i missing something here, ( pretty sure I am ). I didnt drive the stang much when i got it, pretty much got it and ripped the entire thing down, for the new 408w and lots of other stuff.

Try this:

Start out with the shifter in "1".
Run up as high as you want to.
When you're ready to shift into second, quickly slide the shifter into "D" then immediately back to "1". This needs to be done very rapidly.
The transmission will now hold second gear until you slide the shifter into "D".

I'd advise getting a manual valvebody. I got one earlier this year and love it. The old 1-D-1 shuffle wears out both the reverse band and the overdrive band because doing this way of shifting dumps the line pressure and cause the bands to apply prematurely. Anybody who can change a throttle body can put in a valvebody. It's messy but it'll outdo any shift kit you could get. Be a good time to get synthetic fluid in there too.

Can you say no OD. The 1D1 shuffle is not good for an AOD. Eventually it you will burn up the OD band. Trust me, I know. Some people can go for quite a while doing the 1D1 and others after a few times the band is gone.

The best way is to get an aftermarket valvebody like a Lentech. Then you have 1-2-D and a switch for OD like the AODEs and 4RW70s.

I got a Transgo shift kit and 1-d-1 works like a charm with the shift kit. It does not put pressure on the bands like it used to without it. You can go from 1 to d and then wait a few hundred RPMS and shift it back down to 1 to hold 2nd.
