Auto tranny ATF capacity w/ tranny cooler

How much ATF should i buy? My owners manual says 12.8 quarts, jeesus christ - thats over 3 gallons. W/ the supercooler will i need more than 13 quarts? Im thinking not if i bipass the stock heat exchanger.
Also what kinds do you guys use, Im tempted to try RoyalPurple ATF: http://www.americanmuscle.com/royal-purple-max-atf-transmission-fluid.html
but that's still $8 a quart. Obviously Mercon V is a choice too..
How's Mobil 1 synthetic ATF?

go with 14qts. it should be enough. just check the trans dip stick to make sure it's enough.

I also use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. The amount of fluid also depends on what you are doing. If you are dropping the pan and changing the fluid and fliter you need about half the fluid. If you also drain the torque converter you need the other half. If you have a trans cooler add another quart or two depending on how big it is and how long the lines are. And like DBMSTNG says, be sure and check the level on the dipstick.

When I installed my stall converter, I bought 14 quarts. I think I used up like 12.5. When I did the trans fluid cooler, I had a couple of bottles but didn't use any. You don't lose a lot of fluid during the installation. If you're removing the pan and draining it that way, you won't get it all because the converter will hold a few quarts.

Double-check the instructions on how to check the level. I believe you have to check it with the motor warm and running.

yeah, i know you have to check the tranny level once it warms a bit running. Im rebuilding the whole tranny so the thing's going to be bone dry once i put it back in - so im thinking 14 quarts then. How should i fill it? through the dip stick line? Will the torque converter fill up that way?

We filled mine via the dipstick tube. We put what we thought was right, ran the motor for a bit, then rechecked. If 12 is the max, you could put 10 then start it.

yeah, i bought 14 just to be sure, lol (eek $95). It take 12.8 quarts so im put 1 quart in the torque converter b4 i slide it in then 5 in the case + 4-4.5 down the dipstick once it's bolted up then run it in 1,2,D w/ the brake on for a few mins then check the level
