Auto Transmission Problems

I have a 2003 GT with and auto tranny..........yesterday i had the transmission serviced had the filter changed and the pan cleaned. When i left the shop i gave it some gas and the car didnt want to go...........i could hear the enigine rev and want to go but the car would go.......after about maybe 5 seconds it finally started moving faster.........didnt know if the could have been caused by the transmission service or if maybe the fuel filter needs to be changed............any ideas as to what could be the problem

I don't want to jump to coclusions so i want to ask you first how fast you were going? I had something very very similar to this happen to me in December.

trans is low on fluid. check your trans fluid level NOW...

Try not to drive your car too much until you know what is going on. I had a similar situation happen to me and i ended up burning out my third gear clutch. I ended up needing a new trans. If you have something wrong with your trans you don't want to drive a lot and have all that busted s**t being swished around in your trans. Get back to us so we can determine what is wrong!!!

It could also have too much fluid. After I had mine serviced they added too much fluid and it did the same thing. I didn't know what the problem was until it started puking fluid out the dipstick hole. Make sure it's level and check the fluid. The system holds a total of 12 quarts but when you service it I think it only uses like six or seven quarts because the cooler doesn't always drain. Check the fluid level before you do too much driving.

shallow. take a look at his post. he had a trans serivce done. then as soon as he tryed to drive away it felt like he was free reving.

what happend is the shop did not fill the trans up all the way. it's probally a quart or two low. another thing it could be is the shop never ran the car at all after the service and he hops in and hits the gas. it can take a minute for the trans to build up proper presure to apply the clutches.

check the fluid level and get back to us. and also has the car been doing this since. how many times has this happend. trans damage is likely if you continue to drive like this.

wow thats awfull. thats less likely but possible. hopefully that did not happen

your right about the 6 quarts or so. but it's the converter and above the valve body that don't drain. the total most autos hold is around 14-15 quarts.

svt, I even checked the Hanes manual and it says "drop transmission pan, replace filter, add appropriate fluid. Your 4.6L Mustang holds 12.1 quarts of Mercon V." If that's what they went by it could be too much fluid. However, for humors sake, my last car had instructions that read something like this -

1. Make sure car is cold.
2. Warm car up
3. Drive car around town for a while to ensure it is warm.
4. Park for a while.
5. Turn the car off to cool down
6. Drive around town some more to warm transmission fluid up. (But not too much)
7. Park somewhere and shift into 1st gear
8. Rev engine gently.
9, Shift into 2nd gear
10 Rev engine gently
11. Order a pizza
12. Shift into neutral
13 pour Parmesan Cheese on Pizza
14. Drive around town some more until engine is warm again
15. Park somewhere to let engine cool off.
16. Eat another slice of pizza
17. Get out and check the dipstick
18. If level on dipstick is below the Add Fluid line, Add 1/4 of a quart, replace dipstick
19 Repeat steps 1-18 until fluid has reached a desirable level.

So has he checked the fluid yet?

when flushing the trans you need to add 15 quarts in the machine to make up for the mercon thats in the cooler lines and the cooler. it come out to about 15 quarts. 12.1 of it is in the trans. when they figure out the capacity they don't count the cooler and lines, when the trans is flushed ( not a pan drop a flush) it is impossible for the trans to be overfilled because it exchanges the new fluid in place of the old 1 to 1

so yeah sorry for the confusion. trans does hold 12.1 but with the cooler and the lines it's 14-15 quarts

couldnt post i was at work........its only done it 3 times........each time it did it my car had sat for about 3 hours.......after the car warms up it shifts smooth.......it feels better than it did when i first bought it....with the exception of those three times.......

I also didnt have the trans flushed i just had them drop the pan and clean it and replace the filter.......i thought maybe it was low on fluid but i checked it and it seems fine.........

THE worst thing to do is change fluid in a trans unless you normally do it,the old fluid keeps things together sounds weird but seen it happen

well as long as the level is fine then you should be ok. if it does it often i would bring it in.

Unless the dipstick doing the job left the old o-ring from the filter in the tranny. It happens a lot and you get the intermittant feeling like it is low on fluid.
If it slips at all anymore, take it back and watch them pull the pan and filter. I bet you find an orange ring in the filter hole.

Make sure that you are checking the fluid level with the trans hot and motor running.
