Hi all! Need help on a 85 gt tee top that is my wife's, not her daily driver, stock motor. We were both in the car driving it around when making a turn I could hear a lould noise at the right rear of car. Got home to check brakes and all seemed ok. Found nothing other than a lot of end play with the axels. There is .058 on right side and .061 on the left side of end play. I removed axels found only wear at axel bearing. Have no experience with the 7.5 or the 8.8 mustang axles. This is a 7.5 Tag# S276F-3L27-7-55c16 Have rebuilt rear-ends before last one was my 69 charger and that's been 10 years ago. Not afraid to rebuild this one. For the little we use this car and she likes her rims which is 4 bolt; just don't think a 8.8 is necessary or go with another old used replacement. What is your thoughts with the noise? It didn't happen every time and only when both of us were in the car. It sound like maybe a rock had gottn between the brake shoes. It was not a high pitch it was more like a hard steel rubbing. Thinking sound was as if the axle moved too far from bearing normal area? If you all think it's probably axel. Where can I go to get the information to rebuild this and the parts? There was not much wear on gears much to my surprise, this car had been drove hard with last owners.

Check your upper/lower control arms, they could be loose or the bushings could be bad, all the axles I have changed all had end play, and was more than .008-.020.

Thanks for your help. .060+ seems a crazy amount of end play. I'll check control arms too, when I put it back together tomarrow. Being a 7.5 and so worn out I'm going to check in to a 8.8 to rebuild. Thanks all.

Having endplay is typical. Most guys will hvpave it to some point. 60 thousands is one of the lower numbers I have heard.

Do you have up and down endplay? That will tell you is the wheel bearings are toast.

Also, 8.8 axles and 7.5 drum axles are the same...so if you get a set of low mileage 86-93 axles they will drop right in. I would change the wheel bearings first.

The noise might be something else though in my opinion

8.8 will bolt right up and as long as it's not a cobra rear end everything is the same. The shocks bolt up a little different but still work like they should.

Bearings sound more like popcorn than a squeeling. But they're also pretty cheap and easy to replace so it's a good place to start.
