My car recently has developed an issue with stalling out and dieing. I think I have narrowed it down to a fuel issue and had planned on working on it as soon as I had free time. Unfortunatly I had been forced to leave it at a friends house because I feared to take it home at the time.

Well this morning My girlfriend and I decided to go get it. I was going to have her drive behind me in case it left me stranded. While on the way home the car started to sputter and die. Except this time it decided to backfire. like 8 or nine times before it died. My girlfriend said she saw flames come out the exhaust and she could feel the vibrations. When I got home I also noticed that I had some smoke coming out the intake Not alot but enough for me to know that I had backfired out the intake as well. What I wanted to know is what sort of damage may this have caused. The car ran fine after it started back up and idles fine when it wants to run. Anything I should keep a look out for while I'm working on her? Anything that I should check? I figure the MAF needs a cleaning at the least as well as the throttle body, etc. I'm just hoping I didn't hurt her too much.

Sad thing is I just seafoamed her before the last oil change. Oh well guess I will need to do that again.

When was the last time you gave it a tune up? Fuel filter, plugs, plug wire, cap and rotor, 02 sensors, ignition module? Clean the MAF sensor good and double check you timing, just in case. It sounds like it may have back fired through the intake, which is usually (not always) timing/ignition related. It could be a number of possibilities, but start with the obvious and easiest (free) things first.

Doing that all as soon as I have freetime. I just bought the car in July so I dunno when the last time it was done. It was running fine until about a week ago. The cap and wires look new. I know the injectors were replaced due to a couple being gunned up due to spoiled fuel (the car sat in a garage for about a year).

I have a fuel filter and pcv valve, screen and gromet coming in the mail soon. Guess I should also order an ignition module and o2 sensors. Lol looks like this years mod budget is going to tune up. oh well it needs to be done. Can't go fast if you can't go at all.

Anyone know if these backfires could have damaged anything? That is my main concern.
