so has anyone ever heard of a t5 popping INTO gear?

Today I went to my local video game store to buy burnout 3(I have major homework and wanted something to help me relax over the weekend) I get into my 89 gt vert 5spd and start her up. I backed out of my parking spot and heard a squeeling noise. Not like a belt, but more like a bearing. So I put it in first and moved forward to see if it was the tranny, but the noise was still there. SO i put the thing in neutral, got out and popped the hood. I couldnt tell where the noise was coming from so I shut the hood to get back into my car. As soon as the hood shut the car started moving forward... I kinda panicked and jumped through the window to yank the gear shifter into neutral, right when I got my hand on the shifter the car hit the curb in front of the store, which made me fly out of the window, and in doing so I yanked the selector to 2nd Anyway, the car stopped after only about a quarter of it was left on the sidewalk. I shattered the window frame and the door. Luckily the poeple inside somehow managed to get out of the way and no one was injured

Anyway, anyone ever heard of a t5 suddenly going into gear? I can't figure out how it is possible, but it is!!! Really bad bad day....

Oh, also if anyone has any legal knowledge those concrete stops they put in the parking spots to stop you, the spot i drove through was the ONLY one missing this... do I have any kind of recourse I can take for this vital car stopper missing? Thanks guys... hope you had a better day than I did

i know you can shift without using the clutch, so if you tried to put it into first it would be possible, but without any help, thats weird. sorry to hear about that, and i have no idea about the legality issue. how much dmg to ur car, and did u ever find out where the noise was coming from? lol

lol, the car is in suprisingly good condition, the hood has some scratches in it and the corner thing around the light is pushed in just a bit, but not super noticible. The noise went away .... moral of the story, if your car is making a funny noise and you dont know what it is... drive it through a glass wall.

Were you parked on any sort of hill? Its basically impossible for it to go into gear by itself, especially if the car was running. Maybe you didnt take it completely out of gear and when you slammed the hood it slipped into place. I'm surprised it didnt just stall though, because with no throttle being applied mine dies on the spot in 1st gear.

Sorry to hear about the incident though, hope you got decent insurance.

yes, I think if it "jumped" into gear, it would just stall...by the way dude, if you EVER put a standard in neutral and plan to get out, pull the e-brake

Yeah it was on a hill, but it went up hill, and the ebrake was on... I guess maybe it was at high idle, i did just start it, but i had been driving it for about an hour before i parked. My tack says my idle is around 700. I know the factory tach isnt super accurate, but I assume it is fairly close.

The wierd thing with this is it did the impossible, not only did it roll up a hill with the ebrake on at idle, but it also jumped a curb, and did all this while previously idling in neutral for at least a few minutes.

You sure you didnt like wedge something into the TB cable so it didnt stall? The likelyhood of that happening is like .001%. For it to do all that w/o stalling is beyond me. How is the condition of your clutch? Maybe if the clutch was worn down enough it would allow a ton of slippage but still enough grab to go forward.

Have you ever killed anyone, cuz it sounds like a pissed off ghost tried to get even.

lol, never pissed anyone off that I know of taht is no longer around. I just drove the car, dropped the clutch with it in first and the damn thing stalls, even tried to shift into second without the clutch at a idle roll and it wont go in... everything had to be perfect for this accident to happen... I guess me and mr murphy are better friends than I thought
