I replaced my belt over the summer and every now and then when you started the car, it would sqeak and then go away. Now it's doing it while I drive. Belt seems to be tight. I've also seen pullies on alternators sieze and A/C compressors cause these issues. Shouldn't all pullies spin free but the crank pully? Thanks in advance!

Check the pulley on the tensioner first to see if it turns freely. Mine is binding, and causing my serpentine belt to screech. Gotta take care of that this winter.

yes all pulleys should spin freely except the crank! is one not spinning? if so that's your problem! if they all spin freely... take a can of wd-40 or some belt spray and spray it on the belt with the motor running! if it stops its your belt! if you do both of these and it still squeals! i would say you have a bearing in one of the pulleys going bad! I had the same problem and it turned out to be the smog pump. squealed like a pig on start-up then quieted down. Pulley also turned with no problem.

It can also be a pulley out of alignment.

If you have a mechanics stethoscope, you can carefully listen to the accessories to see if you can narrow it down.

Good luck.

Thanks. I haven't taken the belt off yet...too cold. I'll let you know. You can tell when it's going to squeel, because the inside lights go dim for a second or two, then it squeels....weird....

I am having the same problem with my DD. I just noticed it earlier this week , I can hear it when the car starts and idles , I can't hear it inside the car while driving. The belt is only about a year old , will check pulleys this weekend.

That sounds like your alternator is having problems. Another thing to try to eliminate the belt itself making noise is to spray a little white grease on the belt while the car is on. When it's squealing, what does the volt gauge do? Also, if you don't have a mechanic's stethescope, you can use a long screwdriver.

That was I'm thinking. I'm going to tighten the belt today or tomorrow and see if it continues and go from there.

Before you tighten it(overtightening will smoke bearings), check to see if the belt is glazed too.
