BE GLAD YOUR NOT ME...(too long)

So I got home from work an hour ago and put my 66 convertible in park in the back yard so i could open the garage door, (detached garage), when i got around the drivers side door to manually open the garage i heard the worst sound I think I have ever heard before,...the transmission slipped out of park and into reverse. now to bring you all up to speed i hyperexstended my left knee in december playing hockey so when i heard the car take off instincts took over and I tried to run but low and behold I slipped and hyperextended my knee (again) on the ice/snow. so I get up and run on one leg to stop the car...when I finally get around the open door to jump in the car it simultaneously hits the corner of my BRICK house. apx. 6 inches to the right of car's centerline on the back bumper hence crushing the trunk lid, bumper, rear valence inboard about 9 good inches. :nice: . now this car, as far as I know, had never been wrecked until today so my car just went from $15,000 apx. to a big pile of steaming bull plop. You all know that cars esp. mustangs can start to become more than just cars and $$$. I have spent the last 3 years working on this car with 100's of hours of work and buying stuff for it with little regard to what the stuff cost or where it put me financially. It has been my daily driver/weekend/nothing better to do but drive around car, and now this. :bs: :bs: :bs: I have 500 deductibles but that's not the point here.
Its been cold around here lately but just to give you an idea within the last month I have had to strip the engine down to the block and replace a broken valve spring in cyl. 4 and reseat cyl. 5 because #5 only had 5 lbs of compression. after getting the heads off I figure since im here ill go ahead and relapp all the valves. get it back together runs great. Sunday I decide the reason I have been tearing up starters is because the transmission ring gear is missing teeth...so I spend 12 hours, by myself, pulling the tranny and replacing the flex plate. would have been a lot less time if it hadn't have been for 3 of 4 torque converter nut's flats twisted off, whoever put them on last must have torqued them to 100 ft lbs so a hammer and chisel became my weapons of choice. get it back together doesn't start so good. im thinking it might be a incompatibility in mesh between the ring gear and starter or the starter is going bad from the old flex plate. anyway sorry for the length I just needed to vent to some people that would understand that it isn't just a car, it was my stang. :bang:

P.S. pictures to come after i get the digital camera from work.

i know how u feel if it makes u feel any better i did the same thing with my coupe bout 4 years ago into a tree new bumper and valance good taillight panel and trunk lid ruined i wasnt mad just so sick feeling that i just drove it out of the way and walked away for awile :(

yep, i backed mine into a co-workers toyota pick-up many years ago, hit right in the center on the taillight panel, denting my 69 gt gas cap (read un-obtanium) ruined rear bumper, valance, taillight panel and trunklid. i cried for about 2 hours because of my stupidity and the fact that i had just spent a whole weekend doing minor bodywork and priming that area and also had just finished custom lettering the car's nickname on the trunklid the previous weekend. the worst part was that i caught the little toy PU at just the right angle that the only damage was to the taillight, caught it right on the corner of the bed, probably the strongest part of the whole truck

A really bad day for sure!

I hope that at least you'll be ok? No car is worth dying for!

I'd just cover the car up and let it sit for awhile. Be sure to put a cover on it, so its out of sight...out of mind. Relax that leg and spend some time with the family.

While I hate to see something like that happen, it was a fairly common occurence with auto transmission Fords in the late 60's and early 70's. I had my brother's 71 Torino GT do the same thing, only it headed for a 4 lane highway. I managed to catch it before it got there, only damage was to my tailbone, when I hit the brakes, halfway in the door. NEVER leave an older Ford idling in park, and walk away from it and expect it to be there when you get back, they have a mind of their own.
