Each have there specific application.
The coated bearings in my opinion are very nice in "plug and play" applications when you're clearances are exactly perfect under clamping force, and you're certain there's no debris or contaminants in the oil after the first engine run.
I've never experienced a problem from an un-coated bearing... other than when I did something stupid.
Grooves could be used when alignment is an issue with the oil port and the bearing hole. Other than that, IMO it takes away from the load bearing qualities of the oil film between the bearing and the journal.
For the average builder/assembler again... IMO the "H" series bearing from Clevite are pretty nice and offer outstanding performance and sizes.
I have my own opinion of tri-metal bearings. I'll just say; if you need the extra protection from the harder intermediate material... somethings fubar in the first place.
My post is based on my experience. There are a few other bearing manufacturers, but I have no experience with them.
A lot has to do with your clearances, type of oil, temperatures, climate and application of your build when choosing bearings.
