i have a 99 GT. I have some noise that I believe to be bearing noise. It seems to start making noise after about 25 miles (once it gets heated up i suppose) while making a turn coming from a stop. This is the only time the noise happens.

I was told it could be bearings. The question is does the 99 have hub bearings or are the inner axle bearings making the noise? The sound is on both sides, kind of a grinding noise like bad gears, but ONLY while making a turn from a stop.

It has outer axle bearings and seals, they are cheap to replace.

It could be an internal thing aswell, kind of hard to diagnose without hearing it.

Cheap and easy??? About the only thing I don't want to work on is gears so if the outer hub bearings are bad and easy to replace I will do it.

No problem, but its cheap... not easy though, hah.

You have to pull the axle shafts out which require tearing into the differential... Im not sure if you have to remove the differential itself to get to the C clips, or if you can just remove the C clips and then slide the shafts out. Just removing the C clips would be a ton easier, but I cant remember right now which it is.

Plus on my car and my freinds Fox Body the bearings were a big PITA to remove, but I have heard of others having alot better luck with it.


Also, I had a "crunching" and rough sounding bearing coming from the rear end and to me it sounded like the right rear axle bearing but it ended but being the carrier bearing... its deceiving to tell where the noises are coming from back there sometimes.

I did mine at the same time I did the cobra rear brake upgrade. I thought it was really easy..

There are a few things you will need to do:

1) Remove the wheels, calipers (just tie up and set aside), and rotors from each axle.
2) Remove the differential cover and drain the fluid..
3) Remove the little bolt and the main pin (not sure what it's called)
4) Remove the C clips on the end of each axle. This will allow you to pull out each axle.
5) Goto Autozone and rent an axle bearing/seal puller and installer.
6) Use them..
7) installation is reverse!!

Oh, and get the bearing removal tool that uses a slide hammer.. It only took two or three good slides for them to pop right out..

Before I get too far into this I was talking to someone here and they suggested it may not be the bearings. Since the noise only occurs while making a turn could it be the LS Differential????

It very well could be.. Especially if it does it both ways..

Either way, if you're going to be doing the LSD then the bearings and seals are right there..

And the old saying goes.. If it's broke.. Upgrade..

Time for 31 splines and a new LSD..

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience in rebuilding a Track-lok..

Once Again thank you sir. I'll probably get the parts and take this one in to be done. I don't have a lot of time or the garage space (or experience) to do a teardown and rebuild like this. I was hoping it was only bearings but with two people saying the same thing it's probably the differential. And yes it does it turning either way.

If you're just going to be replacing the LSD and bearings, I think you should be "OK" with doing just that. I believe you only have to play with shims and whatnot if you're changing gear ratios..

Anyone else know and want to chime in?

What's the spline count on a stock trak-lok? 28?

try changing the rear diff oil with the ford additive.I have had this problem with a lot of limited slips(not just ford). usually fix's problem,couldn't hurt

if you have had your fluid changed and didn't add friction modifier it could causing the Track-lok to chatter or grind.
