Beginning to question if my car is truly stock.

Most people talk about the classic stangs stock being dogs. My '66 stangs 302 from what I can tell is bone stock aside from flattop pistons...77 year model so its a crappy year w/ bad heads and such...cam seems to be factory and idles like it thats for sure. 2 barrel carb and points ignition to boot. With a 2700lb race weight w/ my C-4 and stock 2.7X somethin rear gear in the 1/8th I can run mid to low 10s w/ good solid hookups. And I was told the car had a 3.55 gear but turns out its factory. So I'm just tryin to figure out if I have a factory freak engine or somethin. Does that sound right for such a crappy year engine...it even has the factory manifolds on it. If this is the case a 4.11 posi rear would make it a beast, heh I wonder about it sometimes...it's never hit posi before...but just out of the blue yesterday I did a small burnout for my friends and it caught posi and then leaving his shop he told me to gap down on it and the whole rear end kicked out on it catching posi...suprised the hell out of me...I thought my spyder gears rusted up or somethin, lol :rlaugh:
 
mid 10's in the 1/8 equates to something like high 17's or low 18's doesn't sound like much of a beast to me. sounds like you need to find a later model 5.0 ho to swap in. but 17's for a stock 77 302 doesn't sound too bad, considering my 190hp, 3200 lb 93 cherokee pulls a 17.5 in the 1/4.
 
I have to agree with .05 on this one... sounds about right really. That said, I used to surprise and beat lots of late '80s & early '90s 5.0s with a similar setup to what you've got... it had a lot to do with tuning, but more likely it was a driver skill thing. I'm not stroking my own ego, but rather it never ceased to amaze me that folks driving 5.0s had no clue on how to handle their own cars. Most folks just aren't "real" car people... they just point the wheel and stab the pedals. I consistently got a holeshot on folks because I would flash the converter right before the light turned. And because I had more tire than power, I never really had much of a traction problem, which meant when they realized I was stepping out, they often just stabbed it some more and lost what little traction they did have. That or they'd bog it off the line. Either way I was ahead.

Actually, I still have good success with this, even in my wife's slow ass '03 Corolla... just the other day I had to make a lane change and got caught at a light against a '90s SN95 GT. He knew I needed over, traffic was a bear, and in typical Seattle fashion, it was highly unlikely someone would voluntarily let me in, especially the ricer Civic behind the GT. :rolleyes: I rev'd it a bit, he took notice, stalled his car, the ricer rev'd it, and when the light turned, the GT shot ahead... giving me enough room to easily get a holeshot on the ricer Civic (who tailgated me for the next mile). :p Hey, even I can't beat a GT in a Corolla, but I can sure as heck put the smack down on a fart piped neon bi-plane winged Civic. :D
 
Well what I dont get about the times is some of my friends cars that are 14-15 second cars are getting mid 8s to low 9s...and I'm really not THAT far behind them. My mph usually is about 55 if I remember correctly in the 1/8th. I suck at all the calculating and estimating that goes with this but wouldnt that put my stang more like highass 15s to 16s. I know I saw a stock Envoy like ours go 16.5 and I KNOW I can beat an Envoy(my dad tried it messin w/ me at a light)
 
mid 10's in the 1/8th sound more like 15's and 16's in the 1/4 to me. 18's are family car territory. When I first bought my '66. I ran 9.8 in the 1/8th and 14.4 in the 1/4. That was with tri-y's, a mild cam, and a poorly tuned 4 barrel carb on a 289.

the formula we have always used is to take the 1/8th mile time and multiply that by 1.75 to get a close estimate of the 1/4 mile time, it's not 100% accurate but it is close, so 10x1.75=17.5, you might get a high 16 in the 1/4 but i wouldn't expect much more than that, even my 70 cougar that had a 69 351w with a mild cam, 4bbl carb, flat-top pistons and headers with 2 1/4 inch duals only pulled a high 15 in the 1/4. and it was making something like 325hp in a 3600lb car
