went to the track for the first time last week. well i made 2 passes and on the second i missed 3rd and reved it up pretty good. don't know what revs i went to but i am sure it was up there. i have changed the rods. i found 4 that had a slight bend in them. the motor felt like it had difficulty under a load and was backfiring on the downslopes of hills. when i gave the car throttle at a stop the whole car shook. it will idle fine. since changing the rods i don't have the wobbly feeling but still runs bad under a load. so is it possibly bent valves?

any suggestions?
thanks

I would think if you throw a vacuum gage on you might get an idea of the shape of the valvetrain...gage is cheap money and only takes a minute to use it...undo your FPR feed and connect the gage...start it up and see what she reads....or if the needle freaking out by jumping all over...

Rods as in pushrods or connecting rods??? I just did the same thing and I bent every exhaust valve. I pulled the spark plugs and found three that were black with fuel, so I took an air compressor and pumped ai into those three cylinders with the black plugs and I could hear the air coming out of the tail pipes. This is a quick and easy way of determining if they are bent. I also did a compression check of ALL the cylinders and I had ~3 that had 5psi or less of pressure so that too was a tell-tell sign.

i bought a vacumn tester and tested my motor. and if i read the dial correctly it is saying i am either to rich or to lean. but i don't know how accurate that is and am probably going to do the compression test in the next day or so.

i was talking about pushrods. i don't think i would have made it home from the track if i broke a connecting rod? i think i'll pull the plugs and take a look. i guess i'll have a tell tale sign if i have black plugs?

question for you killercanary? you are running afr 165's? did you buy the replacement valves from afr or just purchased them from summit or jegs or a place similar? i am just getting my bases covered if i do have bent valves.

thanks alot for all the help

I do have AFR165 heads. I haven't bought anything for them yet as I don't know what I am going to do with them. Once I decide on what I'm doing with the shortblock I'll then decide what to do with the heads. Sorry I couldn't help you more...

i did a compression check today. and all my cylinders were good!! while doing this i got to the #8 plug and it was blown out. the porcelin was completely split like a pie piece was missing. the number 6 cylinder was a little low. so i took the valve cover off and the intake rocker was completely off the stud. stupid me.. i didn't tighten the set screw tight enough to hold it down. it is all back together and running strong again. i am so happy there is no damage to valvetrain!
thanks for all the help!!
