I'm researching a bit for a friend and he's wondering what is the best fox body to get. I know the 87-88s are good stock because of speed density, but are they the best if you're looking to to alot of mods? He's going to be using it primarily just on weekends and such, so he's looking for the best hobby car.

if he plans on doing a lot of mods...like h/c/i than i would get a mass air car. speed density can be used but its harder and you have to get a custom chip for it to run right. tell him to find a nice 89-93 coupe. they look good and are lighter than the lx and gt.

I think any one 85 (last of carbed) 86's have a few minor faults but the 87+ have better brakes, rearend, heads and other things that come stock than the 85-86's but I prefer the older style but I can see why many prefer the newr ones but I myself like the general simplicity of my carbed baby. But he would be better off with what the other guys are saying for the stock Stangs. Mine was purchased with heavy modifications in mind so I went with the older but in very good shape older one because the stock parts that make the others better are or are being upgraded anyway, and the older ones are less common and I actually prefer the look of the front end better. My car says 4100lbs gross weight......I thought they were lighter than that and mine has very few options.......means lighter than many but still seams heavy(according to the door sticker)

I went with a 92 LX coupe for my weekend warrior, my life revolves around this car. Killer project car. I did the 306 Heads, Cam Intake now working on suspension.

'89LX, notchback Interceptor. Super light, tight, mass air, tall calibrated speedo and already has some good parts on it- usually can be picked up cheap. Asthetics-wize, now that's another story... but the best fox to mod from a budget performance standpoint hands down.

89-93 lx, if he likes the hatch get a hatch, if he likes the trunk get a notch.

I'd stay away from non mass air, just a couple hundred more bucks you'll have to spend later to upgrad to mass air, i'd also stay away from convertables and automatics.
Oh, and watch out for the porno red interior, you don't want that either.

Buy yhr car based on the best price for the best condition. You can convert a SD car to MAF for about $150 if you shop. SD will mod just fine if your careful about the cam choice. Once you choose a cam with specs beyond 220 degrees duration @.050" lift and narrower lobe centers than 112-114 degrees it's time to go MAF.

I didn't know when I bought mine but one thing with the 93's is that they have hyperuetic pistons instead of forged, which means NO2 is not a good idea. Now I have to wait until I get a new short block with forged pistons before I go spray crazy.

Thanks everyone. Thanks Sgt.5point0, I wasn't sure why everyone was suggesting up to a 92 instead of 93, but the hypereutectic pistons would explain it.

Yep I was waiting for someone to say it. The 93-95' 5.0's are a dissapointment with the incapable hypereutectics.

89' would be best , I think

90-93 use Air bags : I have and don't like the big steering wheel.

I'm looking to sell my 86 GT {Ohio} i have now- Because i don't want to cut up the car if there are guys out there looking for an 85-86 GT models over the 87-93 aero look .

The '93 isn't sucky... it's just not setup to spray much with the alloy pistons. It's fine for N/A or a little bit of NO2, the alloy pistons are lighter anyways.

As for you spraying 150 on your 93.... be careful man, I was once told that the hyperuetic can maybe stand a 100 shot, no more. But thats just me, I don't risk stuff like that with my car, I don't really want to see what pistons look like melted.

Gross weight is not the cars weight. It is what the car can haul with passengers and stuff in the car, including the weight of the car. My 90 coupe started at around 3100lbs, the last time I weighed it was 2935lbs.

i have a pretty good tune with the 150 shot so i dont worry about it. but i do have a 347 on the stand waiting for the day it decides to melt a piston. just wanted to say that their are many people out there who spray the hell out of 93 motors.

I'm sorry, but iI am hands down going to second sgt.5point0. You can't just rely on the tune. we're talking about composition, how the piston was made, and the overall integrity of it. Flat out, if you have a "big bang" against hypers, they will begin to break down. I have a friend that touted that non stop untill after about 5 months the inevitable happened and the engine sounded like one does when it has bearings completely spun off. He thought that because another friend of mine with an 89gt could run a 175 shot, so could he................
