best tires for cornering and grip?

please give me your suggestions for tires with good cornering and dry grip capabilities (I don't drive much in the rain).

Think 40-45 series rubber on 17x8" rims.

For the street my Nitto 555 series tires in 255 40 17 and 235 45 17 give me outstanding dry weather traction (stripped the splines of the intermediary shaft in the tranny with them on) and the car corners very flat with no tire noise taking exit ramps at speed and has given me the control to perform high speed evasive manuveurs (moron on the freeway in a construction, needed to go around him between cones, accelerate, and then swerve through the cones to get back into the drive lane after he barrelled through an on-ramp construction stop sign and then jammed on the brakes in the travel lane because he realized he just pulled out in front a 65 mustang doing 65 that didn't have enough room to stop for him).

I like them alot. I can not attest to their life span yet since I only have a few thousand miles on them. I am suprised at the traction I get from them considering the RWHP of my car and at the price, I can afford to burn through them twice as fast as say a top of the line protenza.

thanks. I've heard good things about the N555's. Tire wear doesn't really matter (it's like gas mileage...gotta pay to play). A friend recommended Goodyear Eagle F1s, but those are $$, and I've also hear that they aren't that great. keep the info coming!

Nittos are a great choice. I ran them on my '99 Cobra and was happy with them on the street.
Also on the top of my list are:
Top street tires (Really Sticky)
* BF Goodrich G-Force T/A KDs
* Yokahama AVS Sport
Competition (DOT Legal - Really Really Sticky)
* Kuhmo Victoracer (the Ecsta V700 also looks interesting)
* Yokahama A032R

The competition tires are street legal but only have a 50 treadwear rating. They won't last long on the street and aren't very forgiving.

anyone familiar with the Falken Azenis Sports? 245/45ZR17 is $125 each at discounttiredirect.com. I read the customer reviews of that tire, and although each review reads like it was written by the same person, they sound like an impressive tire.

Never tried em, but the kuhmo ecsta supra 712's are supposed to be a great "bang for the buck" tire.

I ran Dunlup SP5000 on my 65fb in 215 50 15 for a short time. They were a soft compound and the car feel real good on the street. They just weren't wide enough to give me any traction with the stroker

I run the Kumho ECSTA Supra 712s abd they are a great tire.

I recently got a ride in a Mustang around Thunderhill raceway (road race track). The car had Falken Azenis, they are very close to a DOT race tire in traction. The traction was amazing for a "street" tire.

Falken Azenis

Nice tire for $112 a pop. Tread pattern is similar to the Yokahama A032R competition tire.

I just researched tires and purchased BFG KDW tires, 2455016 rear, 2255016 front. The rears ran just over $130 per tire, They have 300 treadwear, AA traction and A wet rating. I thought it was a great value and got good reviews. Check out your local Costco or Discount tire for the best price no matter what tires you end up choosing.

and btw, i got 235 45 17s all around. they're going on 17x8 TT IIs. I wanted to be able to rotate the tires front-to-back as needed, and not have to cut and roll sheetmetal.
