best way to seal oil pan, 66 Mustang

What is the best way to seal the oil pan on a 289? Do I need to use gasket sealer on the new gasket? And what is the best sealer?
Also what is the best way to seal valve covers?

Permatex on the pan, rubber gaskets on the VC's. DON'T tighten the bolts too tight, or it will leak no matter what you use. Best to use a screw driver type driver with a socket, snug them all down, and go another 1/4 turn. Best to gho in a criss-cross pattern too. Hope it helps.

Buy a one piece for a late model mustang. 30 bucks, but it's rubber with a steel core so you can't over tighten. A little rtv in the corners, and you have a great, reusable gasket

Thats what I have lying in my garket box right now. I was used for about 5000mi on my '89 and I'm going to use it in my '68(ironically the same engine the pan gasket was on before, just a different car). Sealed great. I also hear rave reviews about the latemodel steel/silicone VC gaskets.

Cork and rubber also work fine, but you have to be more careful sealing and tightening them down. I used blue RTV on all the sealing sufaces of my 4-piece set that went on the '89 before I sold it.

newer 5.0 motors have metal reinforcement bars on both sides of the oil pan. Going to the local U Pull and grabbing a couple of those is likely to help.

One piece oil pan seals are great... Put one in the 351, pricey at $50, but worth it.

Oh yeah, I forgot they had those. A word of warning, though; you'll need the bolts out of the latemodel also as they are longer to accomodate the increased thickness. I have a full set, but only one reinforcing rail .

out of my whole motor...the only gaskets i have are head gaskets and the rubber ends for the oil pan...the entire rest of the motor is copper rtv'd and no leaks after like 10,000 miles and im 19...so it gets put through its paces
