Just a story I saw in one of this months rags...
Guy gets his 355 chev complete from the builder to the tune of $5500.
Builder says he's run the motor in and it'll make a solid 420hp.
Guy takes it to a dyno shop to be tuned so its just right...
Gets it on the dyno and:
- its got the wrong firing order
- then #3 is dead, so they find the plug has 0 gap
- Now at least it starts and runs (makes ya wonder how the builder "broke the motor in" and knew it made 420?)
- then the timing cover leaks, they find the wrong bolts used
- then they hear a noise, find a rocker arm hitting the valvecover
- then they find the wrong plugs in the heads: short vs long reach (gain 11hp)
- then the wrong dipstick, too much oil. Drain down to 5 qt. (gain 20hp)
- then jetting and timing adjustments, and viola - 405hp (wonder how the builder got 420?)
The moral of the story: dyno time is worth the money, and don't always trust a "professional" engine builder.
