I wareading up on some of the enemies, Mitsu EVO, WRX STI, etc. The subie has a "boxer engine". What kind of design is this? And does any other cars have one?
Thanx......Know thy enemy!

Porsches use them as well...Basicly just means the cylinders are positioned horizontally instead of vertically. This supposedly helps to lower the center of gravity.

Boxer is kind of a mis-nomer. Technically, the better term is "horizontally opposed". Rather than the pistons moving in a V in relation to the crank shaft, they move in and out horizontally from the crank.

Companies that use or have used this design that come to mind are most famously Volkswagen for the old Bug, Porsche, Subaru and Ferrari.

it sounds great in theory, but imagine having to pull the engine on your mom's outback wagon because its got racecar technology and you need to change the plugs!!! NO THANKS

I believe that the original Mustang I concept car back in 63 actually had a V4 in it when it was introduced at Watkins Glen. It was unique in concept cars at that time in that it could actually be driven. Most of the concept cars were just pushed out to let the journalists photo them and then pushed back in.

Acutally, changing the plugs on my Impreza took about 20 minutes. It's a lot easier than it may seem.

No it was GMs attempt to compete with the VW, the Corvair was a 6 Cylinder also.
