Breaking in New Gears!

Just got my FRPP 3.73's put in and I was wondering what break in prosses i should do if any? I havn't gotten on my car yet so i can't tell you how they feel, but there is no gear whine that I can hear and it drives real well so I am pretty happy. After I find out what the break in prosses is I will get on it, and tell you how much of a gain I feel.

Get on it and have fun. If there set properly you will not have a problem.

However long it took me to walk from inside the shop to the door of my car. Including the time that I opened the door and started it up, I would guess about 7 minutes. So by the time you read this, I think you will be alright.

like they say i don't think you need breaking...but for my i ran slower...not not slow just to make sure everything was rignt for a couple of ride and after that....full throtle

When i got my 4.10s installed in my last 98GT, I heard from the forums here that there was a break-in period for the gears. So I asked the mechanic who installed my gears about this.

Me: " So I hear that you have to break the gears in, and change the gear oil again after a while to clean it out one last time and make sure everything runs ok"

Him: "No, no such thing as breaking them in. Do you break in gears when you buy a car new from the factory?"

Me: "Good point...."

that KINDA goes along with breaking in the engine doesnt it? theyre both directly related in that respect no?

no real break in period .....but I did change the diff oil after 1500 miles it was nasty all black. Glad I changed it.

I asked the shop guy who installed my gears the same question, break in period? and he said "They will always be "breaking in". Just go out and get on it when you leave to make sure everythings ok." So I did. Nothing but a sore face from smiling the whole way home.

You are supposed to heat cycle the first 100 miles, not going over like 50mph, and no longer than 15 min driving at a time. Then the next 400 miles you are supposed to go easy on it, not going over 65, keeping it 2200 rpm and below. Then at 500 miles, switch fluid, and have fun.

But, no one on this forum listens to that, so do whatever you think. I did the heat cycling and i have no annoying gear noise.

This is EXACLTY what I talked with my mechanic about, and he lauged at me.
Like he said, you dont do this on a new car when you buy it, so what makes you think that you would do it now just because you have new gears?

So I just went out and drove the thing how I pleased in my 98GT...and it worked for me. I *DID* however change the gear oil about 5k miles later, just because I wanted to, but he said I didn't even need to do that.

...I'm just trying to tell you what my FORD Mechanic told me, who's been doing rear-ends with Ford for like 15+ years. To each their own...

I read about the heat cycle thing also and I was going to do that. But when the installer said no need, I just figured it was ok, and if not he's gonna fix it. I have no gear noise or problems either. My question is, and don't take this the wrong way, but who says the heat cycle thing is the way to go. I'll admit I'm not a mechanic so I'm not saying your wrong. I'm just wondering if the heat cycle is a FORD thing listed in a manual or just one mechanics opinion over anothers. BTW is it just me, or do the smiley faces with beer actually make you want to drink beer.

well i took your advise and went full throtle and all i can say is WOW AWSOME! best mod yet. I I have noticed a little gear wine but it is minimul, and is usaully a little more noticble around turns, but with teh stereo on you can't here it. you can hardly hear it with the out the stereo on. I hope that it is not bad when they wine a little. well I would strongly recomend gears to every one. THERE FREAKN' SWEET.

One more thing whatt do you guys think I will be doing in a 1/4 run I have a 98 manual GT with underdrive pulleys, K&N FIPK 2, Dr. Gas O/R X pipe, 4banks custom SCT switch chip tuned by MD motorspotrs, MSD coil packs, 8.5mm MSD wires, PRO 5.0 short throw, and newly installed 3.73 FRPP ring and pinion. You think I am high 13's I was kinda hopeing, but maybe thats shooting for the moon well let me know.

the key to no whining with gears is in the setup. a properly setup rear end will never make any noise, no matter what gears you use. the fluid change at 500 miles is probably a good idea. i know my FRPP cover has a drain plug so fluid changes arent a big deal.

lol you have fun with your 4.10's but i am perfectly happy with my 3.73's. I can't even imagine 4.10s must be fun, but i don't have the money for gas. I saw those vids and they just looked like to much for me but what ever don't rip on 3.73's its still huge differance from the 1998 stock 2.73's so i am having fun.
