Low cost alternative to doing a "drop in" HID kit.

"Drop in" meaning installing an HID kit in without the use of a projector housing (which are not made for Mustangs). There are issues including improper beam "cut off" and high glare. Unless you send your reflector style housings out to have projector lenses installed, you are highly at risk for the above mentioned issues.

There are "reflector" style housings for Mustangs that have a "bullet" or cap in front of the bulb that will cut down on the problems associated with just installing an HID kit in the stock or ultra clear housings. But the kits are still a bit expensive and you do lose the use of your hi-beams.

This is my current setup:

1. 3G alternator ( I went with a Powermaster 200 amp unit)
Many stang owners will upgrade their alternator for various reasons/benefits so this cost is not solely to increase headlight output but it does help.

2. Headlight harness upgrade (I used one from www.suvlights.com for $55)
Harness will increase light output of even stock headlights. Ford's electrical wiring isn't the best as many of you already know. This harness upgrade is definitely needed if you want to use higher watt bulbs unless you want to burn your stock wiring up!!

3. Ultra clear headlights (I went with the kit from www.ageclassic.com which included all 6 lights for $239)
Old faded stockers are very common in needs of replacing not only for light output but also from a cosmetic reason as well.

4. High watt headlight bulbs (9004 bulb- 80/100 by MTEC..they are the 4350 for white light $15 at the time I bougth them off Ebay)

Now for a while I had Sylvania Silverstars in and they made a great difference over the stock halogen bulbs in both light output and "whiteness" of the light. After installing the upgraded headlight harness I decided to put one high watt MTEC bulb in one side and the Silverstar in the other. Needless to say the high watt bulb shamed the Silverstar of course in brightness but also in color (they were whiter looking)

I have only driven for one night with the MTEC high watt bulbs in and love it. Very bright. Housings don't seem to be affected by the heat generated from the bulb. Roadmax high watt bulbs look to be another decent bulb to use as well.

Now my car is at the shop and I attempted to take a pic to compare the bulbs output. When the pic was taken it wasn't near dark enough, motor was not running, and I couldn't back up far enough to get a better pic of the light color and output. Nor could I get a pic of the light as it cast on the shop wall. In person you get a much better representation of the difference.

IT'S NOT HID BUT IT'S VERY NICE!! I will try and take better pics when I get my car back and it's darker out

Na you can see the difference if you compare the picts. Look at the lense illumination. And its probably greater difference in real time.

It is much better in person as I had mentioned. These pics weren't taken under the best of conditions but I will take more in the future for comparison.

Headlight harness came from www.suvlights.com
There are other harness upgrades from other companies but I went with this one because it uses quality components (relays, connectors, and wiring).

Keep in mind that I am comparing the higher watt bulb to a Sylvania Silverstar, not the stock bulb . Many people recommend and really like the Silverstar output but if you put it up against the high watt bulb, you will definitely change your mind.

Also remember that the headlight harness upgrade is a must when using higher watt bulbs or you will have greatly reduced output and fry your stock wiring and possibly melt the housing
 
I'd like to see some pics of them shining on a garage door or a driveway,,, I want better lighting for my car, I bought a standard kit from blue oval and they are junk ass when u turn them on, I like the looks of that kit on ya car bro :nice:
 
I got my Nokya 7000K's off Ebay, 25 bucks. I love them, and I have bought them for my Stang, my Satty, brothers car, and sisters car. Only bulbs I will ever buy. Really cool blue look, like HID without the 300 dollar price tag, FOR A CHEAP KIT.

Why do say just get Silverstars? Is it because you must use an upgraded harness to run high watt? FYI, the harness should be upgraded regardless of the bulb you choose due to the fact that you ensure the bulbs do recieve adequate voltage

I didn't upgrade the harness in any of my cars when I put Silverstars in & the difference is night & day between the regular bulbs & my silverstars. No harness upgrade is needed to run Silverstars.

They don't compare? Judging by the pics you posted, my silverstars look brighter.

An upgraded harness is not needed to run the Silverstars or stock bulbs but it will improve the output and whiteness of the light if you do so.

You are making a judgement that your Silverstar's look brighter because you are viewing them in person and not through a pic.

The pics above show a Silverstar on the left (same as what you are using) and high watt on right. Judging from this there is no comparison

LOL i guess silverstars now come in different brightnesses... some are brighter then the other out of the box!!

HAHA OT: FFW was fun and i had a good time chillin with ya.. Bring that beast down here soon!

Unfortunately we do not have a comparison. Too many variables. Your camera, my camera, background lighting, distance from the car when pic was taken, level at which pic was taken.

You can't compare the two pics because there is no control over the variables. Understand?

My comparison is under controlled variables (meaning both bulbs are compared under the same conditions....one bulb in each housing)

Now if you posted a pic that had a Silverstar in one headlight and a different bulb in the other, you have then compared the two bulbs in a controlled comparison.

Again you can't compare my pic to your pic at all!!

Feel free to stick with your Silverstar's if you are happy with them. I was happy with mine until I did the comparison
 
I like silverstars, but i do believe you when you say the higherwatts are whiter. Plus silverstars are like 40 bucks! heres some pics of mine, i have a stock, and then new headlights and silverstar bulbs

Check out the link if you want to further your grounding in lighting systems. A relatively small voltage drop from the alternator output level (around 14V) to the headlight through the factory wiring/switches (usually drops down to around 11.5-12.5V) can make for a SUBSTANTIAL reduction in lighting output. I have European glass lensed 4X6 headlights in my '4 eye' Volvo. I upgraded to 10 and 12 gauge wiring with soldered connectors, and to separate relays -- one each side for the low beams, and one each side for the high beams (total of 4). I measured less than .2 ohm resistance from the alternator output to the headlight bulb - virtually no drop in voltage. I then replaced the standard bulbs (50w/60w lo/hi; 60w hi) with 80w/100w lo/hi, and 100w hi. Literally a night and day difference in output. I made the harnesses myself and bought 25A relays from the local parts store for about $5 apiece. Pretty simple upgrade. Picture of the outcome although the photo doesn't do justice to the brightness/light quality I now have. If you have plastic headlight components, be certain the plastic can deal with the temps/heat output of higher power bulbs.
