i dont feel like working on it. but when i do ill take the whole thing apart and get pics.

i was racing a GTO. i took off slow in 1st and got on it hard in 2nd (spraying) and when i shifted to 3rd, i missed..... rpms went to 8k, I tried again and missed..... another 8k rev. next thing i know im in 3rd and the car wont go anywhere. so i shift to 4th knowing its 1:1 and i still have that. slow down and try 1,2,3,. no 3rd and the tranny is makin all kinds of f-ed up noises. not only did i brake my trans, i lost the race. i was 4 cars ahead of him when i missed 3rd

so whats a good replacement? id like to stay manual but im not sure if i should go auto.

with the kind of power its putting down now with the nitrous im thinking about going auto.

mines thrashed. its not a bad synchro. its gotta have some rounded out gears on the output and counter shaft. plus all those chunks flying around had to mess up some of the other gears. im pretty sure theres no rebuilding it.

auto is better for racing. but i like my manual. i cant decide what to do

I want to measure mine. It doesn't look that tall.

auto's are a preferred setup for drag racing. you have no clutch or shift points to worry about. a built auto will shift as quickly as manual and be far more consistent run after run.

TKO's obviously, but for god sakes get an MGW shifter with it and throw that hurst shifter as far as you possibly can.

yeah hurst isnt good ive found, Ive destoyed a t5's in my 86 street runnin, I blew up part of third and the input shaft, the other one is still in it, but it just has bad syncro in 2nd, if you go with a t5 for a cheap replacement, go with a 4 banger trans, its lasted lots longer than my v8 pos, and the ratios are insane for running on the street, if not that get a tremec, its the only way it wont break again.

The hurst billet shifter is as good as any other billet shifter aside from the MGW.

The 4 cylinder trans is not at all stronger than the v8 trans by any means. Don't mix up opinion with fact.

Astro performance T5s, GeForce T5s, and Tremec are all viable options that will easily handle your power levels. I personally would go astro or geforce for the simple fact that it would be cheaper and less work.

I agree astro or gforce would be the way to go, if I started with a t5 thats what I would do.

Don't be a sally and go auto. There's many options to handle power with the 5 spd, even keeping it a t5. I destroyed 3rd in mine a couple months ago, and as bad as it sounded, kinda like you described, that was the only thing wrong inside. I'm sure your tranny is rebuildable. I wanted to upgrade anyway though. I called g-force first, and their customer service sucked so I called Astro. They were extremely helpful, answered every question I had, and really knew their stuff. I talked to Tony, who is the President and I believe the owner. Very nice guy. I got the gear kit, bearings, synchros, and a clutch for around $1600 shipped.

Remember this, which Im sure you already know, you get what you pay for. Yes the astros and g-forces are cheap, but the ones built to handle the same power as the TKO's are going to make your ears bleed. I have incar video of my TKO and its whisper quiet compared to the straight cuts, still makes some noise though but I love it.

btw you can get a used tremec 3550 for dirt cheap, and they will handle wayyy more power than the stock t-5.

The Astro stuff costs about the same as a used tremec TKO setup. You dont have the added cost of buying a new clutch, bell housing, yoke, or shifter if you stay with a T5. Also an astro t5 will weigh at least 20lbs less than a tremec.

A Tremec TKO 500 handles the same power as the A-5 Astro trans, but the Astro trans costs $200 less and unlike the GeForce's they do not have straight cut gears, so they should not whine.

Tremec makes great stuff, but if your price shopping, then sticking with a T5 variation is the only way to go. Also by the way, last time I checked $1600 is not cheap, so astro and Geforce stuff is by no means cheap.

I never understood how geforce gets away with charging 1600 for their t-5's when you can get the tko for the same price. Yeah I mean the added cost of the swap, but I never really spent much on the extra parts, reused the stock cross member, regular aluminum bell housing and just a ram HD clutch, and the 31 spline yoke, which I believe you need for the g force anyways.

Ok, there's a lot of false information going around here. Neither Astro or G-force's base kits have straight cut gears. I have heard that G-force's helical kits do still make some noise though. The Astros are supposed to be quiet though. G-force does have straight cut, dog ring engagement kits available, but not all are like that. I don't believe Astro even offers straight cut kits. Neither companies are cheap by any means, and you do get what you pay for. The gearset alone is $1100. It comes with a 26 spline input shaft, so you WILL need a new clutch, but that's it. You will not need a different yoke. The guys at astro have everything you will need in stock. He had 3 different clutches that he likes to use that he suggested to me, and I went with the one for 500hp. It's a King Cobra pressure plate, with a Mcleod dual friction style disc. Another thing I liked better about Astro is they have a 90 day warranty, where G-force does not have anything. I was planning on going with G-force originally, but after talking to them on the phone I did not like them at all.
