Missing teeth on a plastic gear means thew speedo will jump all over the place and quickly chew the remaining teeth off. Some pepole have very poor luck with the 23 tooth gear's longivity, some say they work OK.

The stock range of speedo gears work correctly with a limited range of tire sizes. The 23 tooth white gear works good for some guys, but self destructs in a few months for others.

See http://www.corral.net/tech/gearcalc.html for more help

Check to see if there is a speedometer shop in your area. If there is, ask about the Stewart-Warner speedometer gearbox. I believe it is either a 777 Series Drive Joint Kits and Parts or 666 Series Drive Joint Kits and Parts. It is a small gear box that fits between the speedo pickup gear on the transmission and the speedometer. It has quick change gears that allow you to choose almost any tire size and rear end gear ratio you want. This will allow you to get the accuracy with within 1%-3%. The drawback is that it isn't cheap.
Please excuse the typo (their's, not mine) in the following picture - it should read Custom ratio adapters, not Custom radio adapters.

See http://www.gaugeguys.com/ratioadapt.htm for more info.

a friend of mine uses the 23 tooth. Actually i have to install one in mine. Anyways he removed his tranny and was amazed at the condition of the tooth. It looked like hell. It almost didnt have any teeth left on it. So he put a new one in. His speedo would not work. Installed the old beat up one and the speedo was back working. It was pretty close to the right speed aswell.

you also need the 23 tooth i believe. on a 7 tooth drive the 23 tooth works for a 4.10 gear a 21 tooth works for a 3.73 gear and to my knowledge there is no 22 tooth speedo gear that will work.

yeah, i just did a little online calculation and it said i need a 21.8 tooth gear. so i need a 21 or a 23. ive actually got a 21 in it now for my 3.55's and its off just a little bit. when my speedo says 70 im really going like 67. i need a 20 tooth gear for the 3.55s, and ive got one in the car i just havent had time to put it in. ill probably just keep the 21 and see what its like and if need be ill switch to a 23.

im just curious, how do they make a different tooth count gear fit the same tooth drive gear? you wouldnt think you could take a 20 tooth gear and a 23 tooth gear that are the same diameter and get them to run without promblems.

they don't run with out any problems. I have a 8 tooth drive gear and need a 23 tooth gear for 3.73's. It chews up that gear. what i should do is take t-5 apart install a 6 tooth drive gear then run a 18 tooth speedo gear for my 3.73's and it would be acurate.

Now if you really want to change the internal drive gear of your manual tranny you can match it according to the table below. Be aware that the 6 tooth will offer the most combos for numerically higher gear ratios and offer the greatest degree of accuracy.
