Building a 347

Hey everyone,
I'm looking to invest in building a 347 stroker but I'm pretty new at it. I'm looking for some helpful advice. I read some threads before on going with a stroker prepped block from Hawaii racing. What do you guys think of them and do you know the shipping costs? Should I get a stroker kit or shop around and buy the parts seperate. Do I need to look at getting a new radiator for the more power? How about fuel pump and injectors? How do I go about reprogramming the CPU? I have a limited amount of funds so this will likely take awhile to do.

Thanks in advance :SNSign:

Yeah here we go 347 vs 331 vs 351

I say go with the 347 why leave any cubes on the table...I think you can make 347 car faster than a 351 less weight less rotating mass. about the same cubes:nice:

You will need bigger injectors something like 30 lbs if your running after market heads and intake and exhaust.(i dont think you would be doing if you didnt or it wouldnt even be worth it.) You will need a bigger fuel pump maybe 190 or 255( the most popular choice)

And there is about a dozen programable chips for your car and combination but you gotta know where you are going with it.

Hope this helps:nice:

This will open a can of worms on here.

Well Matt

We can at least do this much here :D

I'll only touch on the one subject which ..........
I just can't let go any farther

Yes ... when 347's were just starting to be built ...........
They did in fact ....... have oil consumption issues :(

That was fixed fairly shortly after they came out :)

Or in other words .....

That prob was fixed and has been fixed for a long time now :nice:

I have seen badly built engines in all displacements. Mostly poor kits followed up with piss poor machining. The type of piston, ring type and use determine how the block should be bored as far as clearances. Hypers are tight, forged are usually much looser.

Chris95gt50 Hope we didn't scare you off already.

Get it done by a pro, don't try doing it yourself. Don't fear the cubes, just go as big as you can for the money. Remember, going with a 351 based motor, you'll have reprocussions when it comes to other engine parts to fit the block which means more money. I say go 347.

if finances are an issue, going with a 351 should be out. a 351 will increase the cost dramatically. there are lots of little things that add up.

when i was looking into build or buy, i came across this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD...ryZ33615QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

the price is hard to beat, and the company seems like a good legit business.

331 or 347 is a touchy subject on this forum. some people are 331 guys, others are 347 guys. kind of like oil and water. now i'm a 410 guy, but if i were staying with a 302 based block, i'd be a 331 guy.

best of luck to you and let us know how things go.

One thing that I feel is SO VERY IMPORTANT :D

What is the application :)

If you are talking about Street use and keeping the r's down ...

You can build a pretty impressive setup without fancy blocks and forged parts.

If you are talking about a Strip Machine with high rpm use ...

You would be wise to go with stronger parts.

Ha Ha ... That don't have a dang thing to do with 331 or 347 :rlaugh:

I do think it's half way decent advise however

One last thing ... Welcome to 94-95 :SNSign:

The info in here is amazing...347s DONT have oiling probs anymore tard that was YEARS ago, come outta the cave

351 is a waste imop also...you can make just as much power with a 302 based stroker and be lighter.

i would have to disagree with you on this one ... with similar upgrades, a built 427 wll kick the living $hit out of a similarly built 347, and the 351 block will withstand alot more power before it splits

Low-5.0s 408 is similar to what a 331 would be for a 302, and he is making a streetable 450 rwhp n/a. i don't think that is very realistic with a 331.

don't be dissin the 351 bro ...

my lil 331 with boost made 643rw

Not to mention if you get a Dart block, do a big bore like Matt and throw some boost to it the #s are endless

700, 800rw easily with the right setup

My pref....you dont need ci these days we have technology.

N/A is a diff story, I dont waste my time with fighting for 400-450rw.

The ci thing is more for braggin rights i think, you can build a 306 that makes 700-800rw...thats all I mean.

And yes a 427 etc with boost will make crazy power as well, but why when you can make the same on a 302 based stroker..just me.

Guys make over 1000rw on 331s and 347s

Also I would call Lows similar to just any 331

AFR 225s I think
1 7/8 Lts

That thing is billy bad a s s...no normal shortblock

Most guys that build a 331/347 dont have near the cylinder head, compression, camshaft he does either

i was talking n/a to n/a.

for the 331/408 comparison, a 331 is one step down from a 347, and a 408 is one step down from a 427, if you know what i mean ... and i was referring to a 331 with heads, cam and exhaust that flow similar amounts RELATIVE to the cubic inches of the motor, in the 331 case, that might be something like AFR 185s and 1 5/8" LTs

but power adders change the landscape. you are doing some crazy $hit with that turbo and there is no dissing a 302 based combo like that :hail2:

Thanks Guys for all the info. What I want to do for my car is use it as a daily driver but have the power there when I need it (in case a "rice burner" wants some) :D I'm not sure if my car would ever see a strip but you never know. I would also like to give those damn Neon SRT4's an a$$ whooping. and maybe keep up with a Z28 or something.
