Bulletproof C4

Hey everyone i'm new on here i'm getting ready to start to rebuild a C4 for my 66, i was going to do a manual swap, but for now i'm going to keep it an auto.

The basic plan is to get a select shift C4 out of a 68, and rebuild it into a basically bulletproof C4 for the car.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas about modifications to the trans?
any suggestions or upgrades would be helpful

Thanks

How much power does the bullet have? I would start with a 71+ trans or even better a C5 with C4 valvebody and bell.

I want to keep it some what original. right now its a stock 289 with few mods.
in the next year it should be getting a cam. i just don't want this trans to fail and maybe add some performance.

Up to about 400hp the early stuff is fine. The later C4 has a bigger input shaft, but not needed until 375-400. People have used them at higher levels, but most don't consider them bullet proof above 400. You would probably do fine with a healthy stock C4 with a good shift kit. If it is a V8 C4 it should have 4 frictions in both drums. Above 400 you need extra clutches in both drums. Mine has 5 in the forward and 6 in the high drum. Above 500hp roller bearings instead of thrust washers are a good idea, and above 600hp they are pretty much mandatory. Here is the best info on C4s on the web IMO. Are you building it or buying one built?
