OK heres the story, tomorrow im going to buy a mustang and its a 5 hour drive. Just today i knoticed a problem with the VIN. THe car is a 1987 black notchback with a tremec and a rebuilt motor. If you'll know the VIN code for a notch or a coupe is 40, in the 6th and 7th spots. The code for a hatchback is 41. SO on the car im looking at the VIN is 1FABP41E3HF246089 (with a 41 in the 6th/7th spot) SO if anyone could give me some advice on whether or not the car could be stolen, or switched due to a wreck or anything i would really appreciate it, also if you think that the car is worth it if it drives straight and everything. Thanks a lot.
Here is the link to the car so you can see all the mods and everything the car has. Thanks.

Problems with VIN numbers are not small problems. What does the owner say about the mismatched numbers?

I would stay away

the auction is over...did you buy it?

sounds like a decent price...notice there are no plates on it so prob a stolen recovery or some other form of salvaged title.

run a carfax...but the vin is obviously not for that car, so it won't tell u much

***** the auction states clear title, which may be true , based on the wrong vin....you can get out of the deal ez if you wanted to.

Owner says that he bought it from a friend and has no knowledge of the switch. My basic question would be...is it possible that the VIN IS CORRECT...meaning that maybe they just messed up from the factory the 40 with a 41. I mean the window MATCHES the title, however...the fact of the matter is that I know what the 40 and the 41 is SUPPOSED to mean, but wondered if there are any exceptions. ANY QUICK INPUT IS MUCH APPRECIATED!!! Thanks for the reply so far!

I really think the car is a great deal...and the guy has 100 percent positive feedback and I have spoken to him on several occasions and feel that he is straight up...and think that once I get it into my State I doubt that I will have any problems. It is definitely not an easy choice!

You show me someone that can convert it from a hatchback to a notch and then i'll be calling them for their amazing bodywork. Do the VIN numbers all match like the one on the dash, driver's door, and even the engine if applicable? There's a possibility that someone could have gotten a dash swap (the infamous black interrior) or had an accident and replaced the door, and so on.

Yea, the window matches the title, and since it is repainted, apparently the stickers in the trunk, doors, etc. are not visible. I KNOW that the interior has been switched to a grey GT seats/interior etc.

So was the gray dash brought over with it as well (because obviously all GT's were either hatch or vert)?

tagging is not the problem, you will get tags ez.

and it was a decent deal....for non salvaged car

salvage title makes a car lose 50% or more of it's value.....there is a guy on this stang site
http://www.californiafords.com

that is selling a gt-40'd gt 5-speed, asking $2500 and can't move it for his life cuz it is "salvage" title

if you don't care...your fine....if you ever try to resell it....you might only get $1500-$2k

another case in point....my sister had a '69 mercedes 'vert that she got in a divorce settlement....valued at $25k

she got $5000 for it cuz it was a salvaged title

Delete a thread just because you found an answer to your question? I don't think that that's how it works. lol
