So tonight I decided that the smog pump has to go. This is only after the pulley on the pump decided to shatter in half. So the question is, does the smog pump control anything else?

It pumps air into the cats to help them warm up faster (more oxygen to help them burn hotter), and also pumps air into the back of the cylinder heads. I believe this makes the a/f mixture a bit more lean, thus better for emissions.

If you remove the smog pump and related parts, you can also remove some of the AIR solenoids in the passenger fender. I believe there are 3; one controls the EGR, the other two control valves on the smog pump hose. I believe you will get a check engine light if you remove any of the smog equipment; you'll need a chip to tell the computer to ignore that stuff. Had that problem on my Cobra conversion; accidentally left the hose unhooked from the smog pump, and I kept getting AIR codes thrown. Hooked the hose back up, and the codes were gone.

I've been driving around for almost a week with the air pump bypassed and the rest of the emissions stuff in place. No cel yet. YET
I do need to get a new air pmp though

Yeah I'm going to get a new pump. Just don't have the $100 their askin for and there's none in the junk yard. I've just never seen a pulley shatter in half.

All my smog equipment has been removed for about 2-3 months and doesn't produce any CEL. My pump was starting to go bad, so I sprang for the clean look of the eliminator bracket, and yanked out every piece of smog stuff. Car runs just fine without it, and has never thrown a code!

If using a stock H-pipe, the air pump helps keep the cats alive.

I'm not sure if a new pump will come with a new pulley bud. Normally you swap pulleys.

The air going to the back of the heads helps to light the cats off quicker. That's why that part only functions when the car is cold.

I'm just gonna get some piping and cut the cats off and weld the pipe up. I'll get the smog equip off this weekend. Seems to drive a bit nicer without it.

Just rip the smog pump out together with all the associated pipework and say sayonara to the cats as well. You can use a shorter drivebelt and reroute it instead of bolting on a smog pump eliminator pulley.
You'll notice improved performance and have a cleaner engine bay.

Yeah I got a 90" belt and replaced it. I do feel a bit more performance on it surprisingly. I just have to get the cash to get about 3-4 feet of exhaust pipe so I can get rid of the cats. Luckily we don't do emissions here, most of our tests are visual. About how long do you think I can run with the cats still on till I see a bog in performance and maybe other issues?

It will depend upon what condition the cats and car (tune) are in now. No one can say. I would have waited to bypass the pump till you were ready to circumvent the cats. A smog pump takes a couple of HP to run (nothing you can feel in the SOTP).

True, I wanted to do that; but the pulley decided to shatter when I have no money. And SOTP? I may see if the mustang junkyard in vegas has a pump since I have to go down there for a fuel pump for my brothers jeep.

SOTP: Seat of the pants.

If you had a junkyard near ya, you could have probably found a pulley. Foxes use a metal pulley that's a slightly different design......

So would a fox pulley work? I know I would have to get a different size belt. I'm thinking though since I'm already $14 into it, might as well pick up the piping and have a friend weld it up. I'm not sure though. I'm torn between the two right now.

Yeah, that's fine if you want to ditch the cats (for off road use only. ). I was just saying that you could use a fox pulley if the cats will be on the car for awhile.

While I don't advocate removing the cats, you may find you can finance the entire project with what you will get for them as scrap metal.

Platinum is bring some big $$$$$ right now.

Check your pm adam.

Couldn't get a good pic since I lost my camera battery, but here's one from my phone. Not the best but you get the idea. I wanted to get this pic up earlier but didn't get the chance.
