CAI fender mounted airfilter, any issues?

last question/concern i have. my car i just got came with a bbk cold air intake on it. the airfilter is fender mounted. i always steered away from this stuff with my last car, kept that type of thing basic.

im wondering if there is any common problems with this? i mainly just dont like not being able to see the filter. also wondering about water flying up into the filter, ect.

does anyone else use one of these? do you have any problems in the rain? getting dirty really fast? the look/additional power of this really isint worth it to me if anyone wanted to trade a stock setup or k&n fipk setup for it, we could work something out.

Yours, I wouldn't worry about. My KB Cool Air kit has my filter about 6" off the ground and just behind the passenger side fog light - just great for heavy rain and puddles...

well if yours works 6" off the ground, then i guess this will work out ok.

ill probably clean it then and watch it closely for awhile. its just a pita to have an airfilter you gotta crawl under the car to look at. i dont have the extra cash to buy a k&n fipk setup or i would just do that and sell this outright.

the bbk cai is fine, i had that kit on my car for a couple of years before i swithed to the c&l kit.

I have the JLT CAI thats mounted in the fenderwell. Although it's not recommended to drive the car when its raining hard I've luckily had no problems when doing so.

Even my MAC CAI is fine and I've driven it through many HEAVY rainstorms, at 70+ MPH, highway of course. It's sealed very well.

I agree with not being able to see the filter. It bothers me too.

Every 20K, pull down the inner fender skirt, up front and remove the filter for inspection. Clear out any debris you can. Every 30-40K, do a cleaning on it.

That's my opinion.

thanks for the input. i dont think for the tiny gains im getting from this, its worth the hassle/me wondering if its going to be a problem.

im going to swap back to a stock setup. inlet to air box.

is the stock 01-04 style compatible with a 2000? im looking at one, but it says 01-04 "possibly others". they all look the same by eye, figured i would ask before hand though.

What NOT to do when modifying your Ford vehicle!

#1: NEVER install a CAI (cold air intake) or RAI (ram air intake) that has a tubing bend right before the MAF! A bend before the MAF will allow for a turbulent aircharge into the system, therefore allowing the meter's electronics to report erroneous airflow readings to the pcm. This will cause your fueling and power curve to become erratic. A straight shot system is the absolute best form of intake system possible.

interesting.

any idea on the stock setup? is an 01 setup compatible with an 00? not too familiar with the differences in the 99-04 years of these cars yet.

Next to our shop when it rains hard theres a 12" deep puddle. Anyway this kid in a Probe GT that has a CAI that goes all the way down to the bumper decided to drive through it. When he did it died and we pushed it into the shop and pulled the plugs and started to turn the crank, water would shoot out of the spark plug holes like a squirt gun. Then we opened the throttle body and a steady stream of water would come out, finally we pulled the drain plug and for about 10 seconds nothing but straight water would come out. Then we ended up figuring out that he siezed his engine. It was way funny though.

yeah they're all the same, I believe the stock TB size for 96+ is 65mm, so thats pretty much all you have to worry about. IE, your 01 setup will be fine on your 00 stang. If you're worried about the turbulent MAF reading, check out my article that I posted about solving that problem:

not too worried about turbulent maf readings. going to go back to the stock setup soon, just wondered about the compatibility. i figured they were the same, good to know they are.

yeah its funny how the stock tubing w/ paper filter is so much less problematic and probably works better all around than a CAI... and it came free with the car lol

yea im not going nuts modifying this car. maybe some small bolt-ons down the road, all i want really is to get it how i want exterior-wise.

so sacrificing 3-5 hp for the peace of mind of the stock setup is fine by me.

I have a bbk fender-mounted CAI and have had no issues at all. Then again I dont drive her in the rain or snow. you should be fine as long as you dont run through a bunch of standing water. there is a splash guard to keep water out.

yea i looked under there, it seems decently shielded. i live in washington though. it will be driven in the rain alot, its not worth the risk to me.

i kinda want a completely stock look under the hood too. if i win this stock setup on ebay ill be selling the cai, otherwise ill probably just deal with it for a bit.
