I installed a short cam pin in my cam (the one that locks the gear to the cam) and my shop says it would be a better idea to use the long one. I hear that the long one is too long though and material has to be shaved off to be flush with the cam gear.

Anyway its too late, i tapped the short one in but i had an idea. I cut a section of the large pin and inserted it into the hole where the pin goes into the cam gear. My shop says this is a good idea to keep the short pin from walking out. Since the washer covers half of the pin face and I torqued it down pretty nicely, do you think i did the right thing? Has anyone used the short cam pin and encountered any problems?

I guess that will work.

The short pin is meant to allow space for the locating tab on the two piece fuel pump eccentric. I have always replaced them with the long pin and single piece fuel pump drives on my carbed cars.

I would pull it out and replace it with the long pin.

I know several people who have tried the short pin only to have it shear off.

Well it doesnt matter how long the pin is, the shear force is dependant on the cross section. even if it was a nub that was an 1/8" long it was still take the same amount to shear.. see what i mean. Im just worried it will walk out thats all. Thanks for the replies guys this helps a lot.

Not really. I have seen it first hand and will NEVER run one like that.

Sorry.

What im saying is this, the stock cam has a short pin (that is hollow mind you) and it held up for 15 years. i installed the short pin on the new cam (which is solid), the only problem i see with it is walking its way out of the cam. I put extra material infront of the pin with the other pin (box came with 2, long and short so i cut some material from the other pin and used it like a stopper) and tightened the washer down, my shop said this is ok and would work better than filling the hole up with sealant. i hope this makes things clearer, its hard to explain.

I tried the long pin with my Comp Cam......too long! I couldn't get it out either, so I had to cut it and file the edges so they're slightly rounded. It was a pain in the ass, but it worked good.
