Today I took my gt40p's to a reputable machine shop to be checked, thermal cleaned, and a valve job. I plan on having these heads ported and polished, milled, springs, etc after I decide on a camshaft. The owner is supposed to call me in the next few days to discuss possible cam grinds, but I figured I would get your opinions as well . I am looking for close to 300whp(with the gt40ps, edelbrock performer intake, and the cam), but peak hp isnt as important to me as a nice torque curve as its mainly a street car. Id also like to have a nice lopey idle, without sacrificing driveability.

One of his machinists recommended a cam from comps xtreme energy line. I told him to write down the specs. Would this cam be a good choice for my combination?
*Duration @ .050 224/232
*Lift .555/.565

Thanks

That camshaft may be okay, if you have the valvetrain to support it.

Why guess?

Go with a custom camshaft.

I had good success with Ed at www.flowtechinduction.com

Another good custom cam grinder would be www.camshaftinnovations.com

Getting a custom will get you closer to the 300hp you are looking for with those heads.

I use a comp cam XE270 and love it! pleny of power, totally streetable (use mine as a dd) and has a nice lope to it. Dont have any numbers yet, getting it dyno tuned next week. Shouldn't have a problem putting 300hp to the wheels

Will a Lift .555/.565 cam clear the pistons?

My .544/.555 Comp XE-266 cam didn't really even bring the valves close to my stock pistons when we clayed one.

Your duration has more role in ptv than lift......

Yeah, I see that the XE-270 has an extra 8* duration on both sides. It seems to be a pretty popular cam among guys running a 302/306 though.

Peak lift has nothing to do with piston to valve clearance. It is the period of overlap, when the exhaust valve is closing and the intake valve is opening at the same time.

The Trickflow Stage 1 camshaft peak lift position occurs when the piston is 2.156" down the bore.

Do you guys have part numbers for those camshafts?

XE-266 and XE-270.

The XE-266 should be part # 35-514-B
