Yep, the new ford hot rod cams should be. also JDM Engineering made 401 rwhp on a 298 3 valve stroker using the new comp cams with phase limiter and the car passed emissions for a street legal package. Your good as long as your not throwing codes. New cams may have to be tuned to work properly. Like with most of our parts, it's all in the tune.

FRPP Hot Rod Cams are NOT street legal/emmisions compliant. Oh well.

Why aren't they? Do they throw a code and if so, can't the code be tuned out? If they passed emissions with the comp cams making 80 hp, I don't see why the hot rod cams wouldn't pass, the hot rod cams doesn't even need springs. On the newer cars here in ohio, they check for engine codes. If there are none and your gas cap seals, you pass. On older cars,
(pre OB-II computer) they still stick the sniffer inside the tail pipe. We can even run LT headers, as long as we the cats and 02 sensor extensions so they don't throw a code. I don't know, maybe in places like cally and new jersey they tear your engine down and spec it, but most states just look for codes on OB-II computered vehicles.

Why aren't the FRPP cams emissions legal? They may not be C.A.R.B. legal, but they won't know.

They may wonder why your car sounds choppy though LOL!

I dont even get the question. What would make a cam street legal or not. There are no equipment violations for changing to a different cam.
Emmissions testing centers base their test on OBDII as stated above.

All I know is that FRPP claims they are for off-road use only and not emmissions compliant. That sounds like they are not street legal to me.

That could also mean that they are not wanting to get them certified so they are not liable when people DO fail emmissions. Usually a cammed car has other mods to support the cam and that would make them less compliant.

Comp Cams has the best offerings out there right now. They are about to release a set that are similar in sound, but a better cam than the FRPP hot rod cams. If you just throw the cams in without a dyno tune you are bound to throw codes. A quality tuner can map out the fuel to keep codes from happening which will be legal.

What I meant by street legal is indeed cams that are approved (50 state legal). I had a heavily cammed 86 that they would not inspect once they heard me pull into the parking lot. The inspector said unless I had proof the cam was "legal', he could not pass it. In NC, they are also required to do a visual inspection and if any emissions equipment has been modded, u fail (nothing to do with cams, just throwing that in). They sniff everything '99 and newer in my county, but if cats are missing or anything like that, U fail. Doesn't matter if it passes emissions or not.

I called Comp Cams and they said the Thumper cams are not C.A.R.P. (Calif. Air Resources Board) certified, which means they are NOT street legal.

However, they also said you could perbably tune your car to make it pass a smog teat. Which means it will not run right and probably be a dog until you retune it after passing the smog test.

It may not be worth the hassle!!

oh i love mississippi... as long as the horn works and the tint is lighter than 27% they don't care if you pull into inspection with straight headers...

PSYKOSTEVO is right, just because they don't have a C.A.R.B. number doesn't mean you can't pass inspections with them. As for cam choices out there I would go HOT ROD cams because they are a Ford piece.... besides didn't couple people on this forum have them installed and didn't both get 40 RWHP???

If anyone installs the comp cams or Ford cams and get it to pass a smog test, let us know.
I would love to get a pair in my GT.
I'm not sure what Pa's rule are in regard to these cams, I'm going to check with my Ford dealer. They are good guys!
