howdy just joined in to talk about one of my projects that I plan on doing in the feature this would mostly be a drag/show car the goal is supposed to be street legal (classic car registration) I’ve been planning this for a week or two have not bought anything yet and I wanted your thoughts and I have compiled them into this list and to know more about me im a diy mechanic have been my whole life I’ve worked on tons of project but this would be my biggest im a mediocre fabricator and welder but I can cut engine mounts trans ex as an example any though helps thanks
The car would most likely start as a 1999–2004 Mustang GT roller. The interior would be stripped down to the essentials with a racing seat, roll cage, simple dashboard/gauges, and the equipment necessary to keep it street legal. It would mainly be used for drag racing, car shows, and occasional weekend driving rather than as a daily.
Engine
The engine would be an older Ford 460 big block. Rather than building the entire engine at once, the car would be developed in stages.
Stage 0.5 – Get It Running
Start with a basically stock 1970s-era 460.
Add:
The objective isn’t maximum horsepower. It’s simply getting the 460 installed and making the Mustang run, drive, shift, cool, and stop reliably.
Expected power would probably be somewhere around 250–300+ hp depending on the particular 460.
Stage 1 – Old-School Street/Strip Setup
Keep the stock short block and add:
Target: roughly 325–400 hp, with plenty of low-end torque.
Stage 2 – Build the Engine Properly
Once more power is actually needed, tear the engine down and build the bottom end for the eventual blower rather than rebuilding it twice.
Possible setup:
Target: roughly 450–550+ hp naturally aspirated.
The important part is that the Stage 2 engine would already contain the internals needed for Stage 3.
Stage 3 – Roots Blower
The final version would use an old-school Detroit-style Roots blower, probably something along the lines of a 6-71 or 8-71.
The engine wouldn’t be pushed anywhere near its theoretical limit. The initial blower tune would probably be around 600–650 hp, followed by suspension/chassis tuning before gradually increasing power.
Final target: approximately 750–800 hp.
At that power level in such a light Mustang, there’s really no reason to chase 1,000–1,200+ hp.
Transmission
Initially the car would use a Ford C6 automatic.
The C6 isn’t the fastest or most efficient transmission available, but it’s cheap, simple, strong, bolts behind a 460, and is perfect for getting the project running without spending thousands of dollars immediately.
Later, once the car is making substantially more power, the C6 could either be built or replaced with a stronger modern multi-speed automatic. Something like a properly adapted 6R80 would provide much closer ratios and overdrive while still allowing the engine itself to remain old-school.
Rear End
A GT roller already has a Ford 8.8-inch solid rear axle, so the plan is to use it rather than immediately spending money on a fabricated 9-inch.
Stage 0.5/1 would use the mostly stock 8.8.
Stage 2 would upgrade it with stronger axles, differential, bearings, appropriate gears, axle retention, and other reinforcement as necessary.
A 9-inch would only become necessary if the built 8.8 actually became a limitation.
Overall Philosophy
The biggest idea behind the project is not buying the entire finished car at once.
Each stage should produce a complete, usable car.
Stage 0.5 gets it driving.
Stage 1 makes it genuinely quick.
Stage 2 builds the drivetrain for serious power.
Stage 3 adds the blowe
