Can a bad alternator cause pinging?

Hello, i have a few issues with my car.
I just got it out of winter storage yesterday and drove it a bit. I just finished up a 3G alternator swap and the alternator went out a few miles after driving it. (I made a thread about Ebay alternators in talk)

Anyway, i noticed when i was getting on it a bit, i could hear it pinging pretty bad. I think it was pinging anyway. I figured it could be 1 of 4 things.

1) Low alternator voltage wont run the fuel pump and ignition system correctly, which could cause it.
2) There is currently no interior in the car so i thought i was just hearing noises because there is no carpet etc.
3) I just brought it out of storage so maybe the gas went bad in it.
4) A combination of all of these things.

The car never detonated before i parked it this winter.
What do you guys think?

Also, how am i supposed to check timing with an aftermarket timing pointer? The pointer isnt even in the same spot as the stock one, so it wont give accurate readings.

My bet is that its the fuel from being in storage. How long was it there? If it was fine before being put away and is only now doing it then just get some fresh gas in there.

thanks for the reply. It has been in storage since around october/november. It was stored with less than a quater tank too.

You shouldn't be asking any questions about abnormal pinging until you get your timing set properly and are positive it is properly set up.

I know i should set the timing correctly, but i also know it is in the ballpark. The reason for the question was because it didnt ping before i parked it for the winter and before alternator swap, and now it does.

I'd tend to agree with the timing comment, though if you havent changed the timing since it was parked, you should be ok. Index that timing pointer and see where you're at.

I'd doubt that the gas itself went bad (varnished, etc) in such a short amount of time. However, you should always store it with a full tank because water in the tank is a concern. I would add Heat and fresh gas to the tank.

The alt should not be a biggie. To know, charge the battery fully and drive it. The battery is more than able to provide ample power for a short time.

Interior being out is possible. Any chance you're hearing a header leak under load?

Give all wiring a once-over in case packrats got hungry. Spend 1 minute and clean your MAF sensor.

Thanks for the replies.
My headers are sealed up fine, its not an exhaust leak.
Its kind of like metalic/chainy type sound, it sounds like a metal chain dragging on pavement when it pings.
I have a spare 5.0 liter motor, so im going to pull the timing pointer off of that and put it on my car to get accurate readings and then go from there.
