hi to all, being the owner of a z06 and an 03 gt, i can tell you from personal experience, stock to stock, a z06 will smoke a gt. like it was said before, a vette is a lot more money, but no way in god's green earth will a mustang gt, mach 1 and to some degree, a cobra beat a z06, again, all being bone stock. dont get me wrong, i love my mustang, but a vette beater it isnt. my z06 is essentially stock, only a vararam intake and stingers, which is just a sound adder and i run 12.4 granny shifting at 117..z06's have the potential if driven hard(powershifting) for 11.8's. just my 2 cents...

everyone looks at 1/4 miles times...that n/a mustang isn't going to do anything to a vette on the street that traps 117 mph. Just about no n/a GT will ever do that without a power adder. You may be able to run one at the track, but never keep up with one on the street given equal driving skills.

I dont think its a dumb question,
he quite obviously stated a MODIFIED N/A GT vs a stock Vette... end of story, sure he could search threads or time slips, but I'm guessing hes meaning light to light, while light to light is similar to the 1/4 in some ways, the setup would be different, Kens car probly would be very volatile on the light to light action...

So I'm putting words in his mouth now, but what would a N/A GT need to beat most stock vettes concistantly and still be a fairly comfortable DD

yes, exactly. as of now i have 40 series flows, o/r x-pipe, tri-ax, and up next is 4.10's, pullys, maybe shortys. with those mods do i stand a chance? oh ya, my car most likely wont ever see a track as long as i own it, so it is light to light and freeway racing.

The only way a N/A GT will run with a competant driver of a C5 or C6 vette is if they are set up strickly for drag and have drag tires.

A street tired GT mustang with 300whp will not outrun a street tired stock C5 because the vette weights less and has more power. Just wont happen unless the vette driver is terrible.

My dad's C5 put down 317rwhp stock. I can't remember what the torque was...I think it was around 330rwtq. Vettes are just engineered much better and are a much better quality car than a mustang. But you do pay for it. Like everyone has said though, a n/a GT can take out a vette given a good driver and mods. Oh and I know this has nothing to do with this topic, but the mpg on a new vette is insanely high for a V8.

I ran 13.4's with my bone stock 1996 Auto vette. Friends at the time with Lt4 cars could pull 12.9's and C5's from about 1999 on could easily pull 12.5's not counting the Z06 which seemed to vary greatly but there were plenty of low 12 guys here in chitown.

Here are a few 1/4 mile times from Corvettes, if anyone would like to see more go here:http://www.ssmoparmuscle.com/speedcomp.htm
Edit: keep in mind these are all numbers from Motor Trend & Car&Driver.Which correct all 1/4 mile times to sea level.

Right, but just keep in mind the 478,956.13 times this has been brought up that their drivers suck because of the times they got with Mustangs. They get numbers like 14.5 for 99-ups and there are guys on here slipping into the 13.9x's with nothing more than killer driving and dumping some air out of the Crapyears.

Don't get me wrong.....I am a DIE HARD ford guy, but there just aren't that many N/A Stangs out there that can hang with a newer vette. Just simple power to weight ratio.

I think what this thread has shown is that you need to be more specific about what kind of Vette you're talking about and where you want to beat it. 1/4 mile? stoplight to stoplight? Open Track? C5? Z06? C6?

And to whoever said that a Mustang can compete with a Vette in a handling race, you should qualify that you'd have to completely rebuild the Mustang's suspension from the ground up. The Vette has the inherant advantages of a lower CG, lower overall weight and better weight distribution, not to mention better suspension geometry. Just watch any Grand Am race. Very few Mustangs compete and those that do don't fare too well, and we're not even talking about competing against Vette's here. 03/04 Cobras are getting smoked by cars like the 350Z, Acura RSX-S and the RX-8 because they simply out handle the Stang. take a look at these results:

http://www.grand-am.com/Events/SessionResults.asp?SessionID=418

There are no Vette's here but anybody who watches any type of road racing knows that they typically go head to head with the Porsche 996's. The Cobras here are being smoked by cars in a lower class!! Mustangs can go pretty good in a straight line but other than that, sorry, forget it. They simply aren't made for it.

well good point but anyways. it's more about the driver and not the car. 1st place you have a 996 and look, in dead last 50th you have a 996.

i can keep going on but i'm tired.

I was going to say that for a moment there, I thought I was at a Honda board and someone asking if their Civic could beat a Stang

I have never been paired up with a C5 at the track, but I'd say I would do pretty well against one. I ran a 13.92@100.5 with just a drop in K&N and stock gatorbacks.

I'm now in the low 13's and in the hunt for high 12's this spring and I haven't even touched the heads, cams or exhaust manifolds.

Now beating a Z06 in a drag race is quite the stretch to do N/A without heads, cams, L/T's, slicks, and perhaps some 4.30's and up.

With the same $ it may be wiser to just slap a KB or Vortech kit and achieve better results, but then again staying N/A certainly gives you better bragging rights!
