That's pretty bad... but are your battery terminals coated in blue crap? That's my problem.

I've never washed my 180k mile engine and you got me beat nicely. You drive a lot of country roads? Because there is sure a lot of dust around.

That is pretty bad lol. I pitty the fool who has to work on that engine bay! I live on a dirt road though and it can get really bad if I don't clean it more often that I would really want.

Dang that is dirty!
If you are going to clean it up I would suggest Black Magics engine cleaner spray.. I used it on my engine a while ago in similiar shape and it came out pretty good looking....

how can you let your engine bay get that dirty? you wash the outside of the car dont you? why not spend the extra ten minutes and detail the engine bay.

anyone ever tried steam cleaning?

i used to work at one of the better ford dealers as a detailer (as a summer job) and we would just leave the engine running, spray degreaser, rinse, and coat it with interior cleaner.

This should give you an idea how to proceed. This is my daily driver and these pics were taken last summer before and after I detailed the engine. It had probably never had an engine detail. I would stay away from Simple Green as it will etch and stain aluminum parts under the hood. In my experience orange degreaser works much more effectively at removing grease and won't stain or etch anything under the hood.

Process:

Sprayed entire engine compartment with Rubbermaid Orange Degreaser and let it dwell for about 5 minutes. Next, I lightly misted water and agitated the entire engine with a paintbrush. Then the engine was towel dried and the remaining water left to air dry for about 30 minutes. Finally, all plastics were dressed with Stoners Trim Shine, and the painted surfaces were treated with Meguiars Cleaner Wax.

Before:

That looks great, N8. Our engines have way too many nooks and crannies for crap to sit in, and they really aren't much to look at either. (Unless they are wearing a KB, etc). I tried hand cleaning a 4v that was on an engine stand once, and it still took an eternity.
