can head/cam caps be replaced

Can the caps that hold a cam in place be swapped w/ caps from different heads of the same year etc.?

They are all machined to the same specs right?

No you can't. You can try but good luck getting them to match up. Only way to do it would be the have them line bored and even then it may not work. It's a big problem when people mix up the caps between the left and right head or multiple pairs of heads.

+1..... they bore out one piece of metal and chop it in half, that is your cam cap. If they are screwed up might as well find a new head.

In addition to the above information, they must go back to the same spot you removed them from... just for a little further clarification.

Make sure to mark them so they don't get mixed up.

Some shops will align bore them or bore them to use bearings.. I hear the bearing method isn't too successful though..
