Just like the title says. I have dumps that end almost exactly at the rear axle and turn down and to the sides and I'm wondering if I can pass. The car is a 65 so I don't have to worry about emissions. Also, will having antique plates help me at all?

If the exhaust does not exit from under the car either out the side or out under the rear bumper then it is illegal in most states so your mileage may vary.

I think in California, it has to be past the rear axle if under the car, or past the last passenger door if exits on the sides.

i think its a federal law to have tailpipes. exhaust is not suppose to exit in front of the rear tires. We had this discussion in our club and had an officer that is a member pull up the laws.

mine dumps before the rear axle and it passed I just went and told the guy before i did it "67 mustang, if i dump before the rear axle will you pass it?" to which he replied, "as long as it has mufflers, i'll pass it". As far as the in front of the rear tires thing, thats not true, after all many new cars, including many F150's has their exhaust exit before the rear tires. It just depends on where you live and if the guy doing it likes hot rods.

Jason, just because some hick out in the country passed your car does not make it legal or right. The law is written to make sure the exhaust exits PAST the passenger cabin which means it has to go completely out the back on most cars (trunk is part of cabin in most instances) or out the side behind all the doors and in trucks it simply has to be past the cab.

Actually, the way the law is written......

the F150 stock has illegal exhaust...along with an AC cobra and any other car that has side exit exhaust or side pipes. Because "it causes a potential danger to people entering and exiting a car" that is taken directly from how the law is written. If I can find a copy of it today, I will post it.
